General Car Chat / A nice surprise.
« on: 17 April 2012, 16:44:52 »
Local garage owner came round today and  asked me if I could come down and look at a Lotus Carlton one of his customers was having a new water pump fitted to. He asked me if I could come down and reset some fault codes using my Tec1. Was a real early one being number 51. Hey and it was nice being paid by a garage for once!!!!!!!  ;) ;)

I have a Parrot MKi9200 hands free kit sat wasting away at home. I'd like to fit it in the Omega. However I have the Bose set up. I'm concerned it may not be compatible due to the 2 ohm set up used by the Bose. Has anybody fitted one? If you have did all the steering wheel controls and display work ok? My Omega has the 2013 head unit fitted.

General Car Chat / Cam cover gaskets. The alternatives
« on: 05 April 2012, 13:59:30 »
Right. I've been some research on the quality of cam cover gaskets. General opinion  is to use genuine but what is genuine? You can bet your life GM do not make their own gaskets. From past experience I know the gaskets in the straight 6 for the head gasket are made by a outside company. So I did some digging around and found out some information on company called Elring. Now Elring make all sorts of gaskets for many of manufacturers as well as supplying to the trade who in turn sell them to the customer. Elring state clearly on their web site they supply to the makers. So I did some hunting and found a pair of gaskets and O rings. I've ordered them and they turned up today. On Elring's more than helpful website I was able to cross reference the codes and sure enough they are one and the same. Even on the packets they use the GM part number and Kat code. I don't know what the Kat code refers to however having them appear on both websites sounds promising. The quality looks excellent the moulding is spot on. Elring are well known in the VW air cooled scene for being of good quality. So I'm going to fit them and see what happens. As long as the breathers are kept clean I see these lasting another 70 k miles. I will not be using GM sealant (another item you can bet your life they've never made them self) Instead I will use silicone sealant engine RTV oil resistant. I've used this stuff for many years and my friends company who refurbish manual gearboxes use exactly the same without issue. Another bonus with this gaskets is they cost me 18.35 posted to my door. That's for two gaskets and 16 O rings. Part numbers for those who are interested are:-

GM 90511451
KAT 6 07 642
EAN 4041248190821
ELRING 372.320

These are just the numbers for the gaskets not the O rings. Hopefully this will lead to a cost effective alternative to OE gaskets.

General Discussion Area / Hosepipe ban
« on: 05 April 2012, 06:10:38 »
Well that's pee'd me off. How on earth can this happen? no no no I don't mean about lack of rain. I mean the fact the water companies can get away with it. I mean it's not like this problem isn't incurable. We've known for years the south east suffers from water shortage so why aren't we pumping from another region? Because to install pipes cost money. So rather than spend it the water companies impose terms and conditions on the customers. I feel like burning my bra in protest. Ops I've let something slip haven't I?

Omega General Help / Replacing HID bulb
« on: 02 April 2012, 00:07:24 »
I've never had a HID set up before. It got me thinking. How do you change the bulb? What I really mean is what precautions do you need to take apart from making sure there switched off? How often do they go? You can tell I'm bored can't you?

Omega General Help / Carlton LSD into a Omega
« on: 31 March 2012, 00:28:51 »
I'm sure this has been talked about before but i couldn't find any conclusive answers. So will it fit? I've had a quick look at some photos of Omega diffs and so far I've worked out the cover would need swapping. Are the mounting holes in the right place on the sub frame? Would I need to do some mods to the prop. Just got me thinking. I've got a excellent Carlton LSD in storage at the mo. In fact I have the diff, prop, driveshafts and a choice of sub frames from a Gsi Carlie or even a LC (if there different not sure) I don't really want to strip mine out just to find it doesn't fit. So if anybody's done some research on this already.....

See I can't leave fek all alone can I? Got to fiddle. I've even started wondering if the spare GSi manual gearbox I've got will fit the V6. Somebody stop me for Gaud sake  :-[ :-[ :-[ :-[

General Car Chat / Have you checked your fan lately??????
« on: 30 March 2012, 18:26:10 »
I don't know if the 4 bangers have a electric fan or not but those of you with the V6 may want to check your engine fan. It's the one fitted to the engine side of the radiator. While I was working on the Mig today I had to remove the small under tray from the front of the engine. I was underneath looking up running wires to sort out a electrical issue I've been having with the headlights. As I was looking for a route I noticed the 3 nuts holding the fan to it's mounting were almost falling off. Somebody may of messed around with the fan and that's why their loose but if not then over time they've vibrated loose and almost let the fan make a break for freedom. So the next time you've got ya heed under the Mig just take a look and make sure the 3 nuts are tight. Only takes 2 minutes with a 10mm socket.

General Car Chat / I've only Bl**dy fixed it!!!!!!
« on: 30 March 2012, 18:18:34 »
YAY!!!!!!! No more warnings about the headlight levels. All fixed but what a carry on. I've spent ages faffing around with front sensor but it turned out to be the wiring. Some where between the sensor and control unit Two off the wires have grounded together. It through me for while as the warning I was getting a lot of the time was about low voltage. That was because the feed to the sensor sometimes manage to work so when I was measuring the voltage it seemed ok. However I soon got a high voltage warning and that's when the penny dropped. So I've run two new wires to the sensor and jobs a goodun!!!!

Omega General Help / Steering wheel buttons
« on: 30 March 2012, 00:12:12 »
One of the buttons on my steering wheel has stopped working, it's the one marked "o". Has anybody come across this before? do I have to start trawling the pit for replacements? or is it a easy fix? Am I right in thinking the buttons are connected to the headunit using a Can-bus system. Stereo is the NCDC 2013

Omega General Help / Bonnet Pull Lever
« on: 27 March 2012, 23:55:03 »
Bloody broke it  >:( So can I just replace the lever and bracket or do I have to route a new cable through to the slam panel?

Due to Toy Boy's total incompetence and wiping out everybody's post count (bloody typical) I can't post in the trade area. I want to buy one of the operating manuals for sale at the mo. I want the Face lift NCDC operating manual. Until Rent Boy sorts out the problem can I lay claim to this??

CHeers  ;)

« on: 23 March 2012, 17:30:02 »
As a hardened saints fc fan can you imagine my horror at finding out my latest Omega was first registered in Portsmouth!!!!! Oh the shame of it. What am I to do??? I have an idea. Tonight I will take it to a field where nobody ever goes and set fire to it. My only concern is trying to get in to and out of Fratton Park without being seen  ::) ::) ::)
