General Car Chat / Omega Diesel MPG figures
« on: 24 February 2011, 11:16:28 »
No doubt this has been discussed at length before...

I'm currently using an old cavvy diesel for my 40 mile backroad blast to work and back, and getting a genuine 50mpg.  However, the old girl isn't getting any younger, so I'm considering chopping her in for an omega diesel.  Thing is, depending on where you read it, the quoted mpg figures for these cars vary greatly!!

So I'm after some real world, average mpg figures for the 2.2 and 2.5 in saloon or estate guise...

TIA  :y

General Car Chat / Cavalier 1.7 TD (Isuzu engine) glow plug light
« on: 01 February 2011, 21:11:25 »
The old cavvy that I use for work has developed a rather annoying fault...

When I first turn on the ignition from cold (say first thing in the morning), the glow plug light comes on for a split-second, then goes off again.  If I turn the key off and on again, it does the same thing again.  The only way I can get the light to stay on (and actual get the the glow plugs hot) is to turn the engine over briefly.

This has to be an electrical problem...

Any ideas?  :y

General Car Chat / Pre-facelift Vectra B GSI Springs
« on: 03 August 2010, 10:18:21 »
Hi there.

My father-in-law owns a '99 T plate Vectra GSI estate, and needs to replace all 4 springs.  He enquired at his local Vauxhall dealership and was told that these were special MSD items, so they could give him no information whatsoever!!   ::)

Does anyone know what make of springs were originally fitted, where they can be sourced from now, and how much they are likely to cost?

I have a feeling that might be Bilstein's, but I might be wrong....

Cheers

At the last meet I remember lots of people saying that we should try and squeeze another meet in before the end of the summer...

Well time is marching on, and it won't be long before we will all be moaning about the crappy weather again!!  :-/

I suggest we meet up at the Crown in Ardleigh again, after the excellent feedback from the last meet! :y

I'm thinking some time around July/August, so as to fit between the Lakes and Newent events?

We need to make sure that someone is on camera duty this time though!   ::)

I could also bring any parts along that you may want from the car in the link below...  8-)

Ok, so I know what jobs I'd like to do on the day. I just need to confirm what bits I'm gonna need to get, and where I should get them from (balancing cost/quality)...

Can you guys fill in the blanks?

ATF Change.....

Diff Oil Change.....

Resolving misfire issue (I suspect this is only water ingress, but I want to be prepared in case its cam cover gaskets) so I list of everything I need would be great (assuming, of course, that I can return what I don't need)....

Cheers guys!  :y

Meetings, gatherings, parties etc / Local meet in Suffolk
« on: 07 July 2010, 21:45:57 »
Is anyone here from the Suffolk area (apart from Lazydocker and myself)?

Once Billing is behind us, I'd like to try and organise a bit of a get together!

I have a few ideas for a good day, but they depend on numbers, so it would be good to get a rough idea of how many people would make the trip first.

Perhaps anyone interested could add their names and rough locations to this thread?

Thanks.

General Discussion Area / Power Pack recommendations please
« on: 20 September 2011, 23:32:10 »
I've decided it's about time I bought an all-in-one jump starter with tyre pump, etc for the garage. Something like this one...

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/12V-5-1-POWER-STATION-200-WATT-INVERTOR-NEW-/270744194267?pt=UK_SportsLeisure_Camping_LightsLanternsTorches&hash=item3f099c8cdb

It's going to be the tyre inflation feature that will get used the most (as I seem to have an ever increasing number of tyres on my driveway  ::) :-X)

I don't want to spend a fortune, but want something that's going to work when I need it too!

Your recommendations please...  :y

General Discussion Area / FreeSat Box advice needed
« on: 16 August 2011, 10:27:03 »
I've just been given a FreeSat box. I'm seriously considering doing away with my current subscription to Sky, and using this box instead.

I've never used FreeSat before, so can I simply remove my Sky box and plug this one in? Will it work with my Sky dish and LNB? Does the dish need to be repositioned to pick up the FreeSat signal?

General Discussion Area / Zirk and Serek
« on: 25 July 2011, 23:04:59 »
Over the past 2 days, I have had the pleasure of meeting Zirk and Serek. I'd just like to say what thoroughly decent guys they are, and thank them both for taking the time to come and see me (I know I live in the middle of nowhere!)

Just more evidence of how good this forum really is!!  :y

General Discussion Area / Insurance recommendations please
« on: 21 July 2011, 10:59:27 »
Just had my Admiral multicar renewal through, and it's gone through the roof!!!

Looking for suggestions for sensible quotes from reputable companies please. I need to insure my mig, my diesel cavalier and SWMBO's Hyundai Getz.

Also interested in whether it would be cheaper to get a trader's policy, and what I would need to do to qualify...

TIA  :y
