Noticed a funny 'Crackling' noise coming from the right side of the car this morning. No, unfortunately it's not on fire. 

It's linked to the rotation of the wheels, not the engine. It is very audible at 1-10mph then either disappears or is drowned out at faster speeds.

It sounds like one wheel has been wrapped in crisp packets.

I came out of a carpark next to a wall and it was a lot louder as the sound bounced back.

I'll jack it up tonight and give the wheels a spin.

Be nice if it was a stone rattling round somewhere, but knowing this POS Omega it will be something ELSE, more expensive.

Anyone ever heard an Omega crackling?

Any ideas what it COULD be? Wheel bearing? Brakes? CV Joint?

Hoping not the bearings. Usually when I've seen them go, they whine and rumble. Does sound a bit 'broken bearing-y' though.

I'd love it if it was stones in the tyres. Doesn't have that 'click, click, click' noise though.

Well, I found out what it was.

A pipe that I believe to be the gearbox breather had gone hard, split and fallen off whatever it was attached to and was dragging on the floor! Hence the crackling.

Good that it was something simple and easy to spot.

However, can someone point me to where to reattach it? Do I really need to reattach it?

As its an omega, I assume I will probably need to grow my arm another 6 inches longer and have an elbow that bends in both directions in order to reach where it reattaches?!

one end is atatched to the top of the gearbox,and the other end is not atatched to anything is just sits up in the top of the engine bay with the end of the breather pipe facing downwards to aid any residue to fall to the ground  HTH

Its right on top of the gearbox mate - you may have to drop the box a bit to get your hand up there to refit.  Reason there's a pipe attached is to stop water getting into the box

I've also found a photo on another thread which illustrates where it is.

I found the top end when I did my breathers, couldn't work out where the hell I'd unplugged it from, so took the plenum off again to get a better look!

Only when I googled for something like 'spare omega breather pipe' did I get some hits saying it just vented to atmosphere! DOH!

Usually a tight fit on stub on top of box - put end of rubber pipe in boiling water for a minute or so and it goes on easier

I'd say you are one happy chappy now that its a fairly simple fix
