what have you gone and done now !!!!!
« on: 13 May 2007, 15:44:25 »

thats what why wife said yesterday when i came home and told her i'd bought a 97 3.0 mv6 ex cop car for a 100 quid .

hello im new here , ive been a motor mechanic for 10 years and just bought my first mv6 , only trouble is they seem pretty reliable and the only  experience iv'e had on these cars is servicing and timing belts ,

however the one ive bought does need some tlc ,

right bank , plugholes full of coolant, misfiring
right bank, downpipe cracked
bodywork, looks like its been washed with a brillo pad
interior , the previous owner has kids too
timing belt , no history so ill have to do that

on the plus side ,

oil and coolant are very clean
only has 145k on the clock
well documented history from the cops with speedo calibration certificate
taxed until end september
private plate, (if all goes t**s up at least the wife can sell that )

although i work in the trade and i do have an extensive knowledge , im not afraid to ask for help and after browsing through this site on more than one occasion i have found there to be a lot of people here who know these cars inside out , which can only bennefit everyone that uses it .

any thought on my purchase welcome

thankyou

I know you are in the trade, but just a couple of points on the cambelt - do the kit, inc tensioners, rather than just the belt. Also, unlike virtually every other cambelt, you do require the camlock/timing kit, as the cams need to be timed properly.

Sorry if you were already aware of this.

For £100, you cannot complain.  OK, so it has a couple of issues, but I imagine nothing insurmountable :y

ive looked at a few kits , gm gates and contitech im thinking of using the gates kit as the oe kit is a bit pricey and iv'e had problems before with conti kits on vag engines ,

do you know of any other

As you are in the trade, apply for Trade Club (http://www.tradeclub.co.uk) at your local Vauxhall dealer.  Trade Club prices are better than standard trade prices on service items.  Eg, your cambelt kit is £120+VAT retail, £110+VAT trade, £90+VAT TC.

Trade Club is free to join.

You can get possibly better prices for pattern parts in this instance, but worth applying anyway ;)

I always use genuine Vauxhall cambelt kits.

May be worth changing waterpump - I tend to change every 2nd cambelt, and at £25 (TC price), saves the effort of stripping down later.

Welcome to the forum, Michael!  :y

Sounds like you have a good project. Get your money back even if you do not manage to fix, but i am sure with your trade and this site the problems will soon disappear( the car's i mean). :y

thanks for the warm welcome , as the car iv'e bought is an ex plod is there any differences i need to look out for when buying bits or is it all pretty standard , are the ecu's re-mapped and if so are the original maps re-installed when the car is put into public domain , also are the electrics butchered when we get them or has it all been made to be like the standard car again.

cheers
