You are asking for a smack, STMO - but rumour has it that you would like that!

Al came to me to fit the starter moter that he had sold me, as no other forum member had come to my aid, and did a splendid job, quickly and efficiently despite my car being half in the road.
All assembled and reconnected, turned the key - absolute silence! It can't be low battery, can it, because Al had a 12v inspection lamp on the battery minutes ago? I nearly worried a little.....
Phew, it WAS the battery!

Thanks a million, Al.

My thanks to Al, who has just kindly delovered a starter motor to me.
May I make another plea on here for one of OOF's mobile mechanics to fit it for me, please?

"tunnie", I was along the coast from you at Weymouth (not necessarily on the same day) when I had my first and only sighting of this magnificent aircraft, on Carnival Day.
LOUD.
I was on the pier at Weymouth when this noisy giant suddenly appeared, flying VERY low over my head with a roar from hell - nearly made me rush to the nearby Marks and Spencers!

Somewhere in the murky regions of my memory is a little snippet about the old Triumph Herald engine, which had a De Saxe construction and as I undertand it, the crankshaft was offset slightly in some way such that the maximum wear point did not occur at the top of the stroke, thereby creating the usual ridge, but fairly evenly distributed along the whole bore, meaning such engine re-conditioning as the noble bear was asking about is required at longer intervals.
That answer was off-the-cuff and without recourse to Google, so I may be a little light on detail and/or accuracy - OOF experts will put me right in due course!

P.S. Hijacking this thread, can any mobile gentlemen fit a starter motor with the car (2.6 V6) in  situ on my drive?

Please can anyone confirm that a starter moter from a 3.2 will fit a 2.6?

Is this starter motor the correct one for my 2.6 V6 petrol, '51 Reg?

Anything known about the vendor and is the price good, please?

RobG, how much are you asking for that starter motor? Carriage won't be cheap, unfortunately.

"flyer", all connections are sound and secure, and the battery voltage dropped significantly when trying to crank - no rotation from the starter, only smoke!
Obtaining another starter at a sensible price is only part of the problem, gents; I have neither the skills or facilities to replace it and as I said originally, I'm looking for an OOF mobile mechanic to come to Witham and help me here, as I can't bump start an automatic and it doesn't have a starting handle! .

Already done that, zirk, when I suspected the cabling a while ago and after checking and tightening, etc., it appeared to behave itself......until today - the motor was not turning at all and was smoking, so I'm pretty sure it's a goner!

Not exactly a delivery issue, but still a plaudit for Ebay.
Last December I booked a holiday rental for one day/night in London and had to pay £200 deposit (damage waiver) and £18 part rental, the rest payable on arrival.
On arrival, the occupiers had never heard of the "landlord" as they were the owners and not in the rental business.
After reporting this incident to Ebay/payPal, I was refunded in full within a week or so.

If you are ever anywhere near here:-
Emiles Fish & Chips
1 Barbican Parade/Barbican Rd
Looe, Cornwall PL13 1EZ
You will be treated to the world's best (and unhealthiest!) chips, not dry and floury and lacking in thaste, but limp and full of flavour. Their fish is perfect, too.

One of those high voltage zappers from poundland or 99p stores are much more fun - the little buggers often explode with a satisfying "bang"!
