Plips / Fobs / Remotes and their programming...
« on: 01 October 2015, 10:27:29 »

Here's one for The Boy or Mark DTM, and several other, too, I'm sure.

In order to programme a separate remote fob, the PFL type, not MFL-onwards, non-IR type... can you 'clone' an existing fob, or do you need the car there? Or, to put it another way, can you do a fob reprogramming via post?

I suspect 'no' but just checking  :)

The fob isn't programmable, so you program the car to the fob. Which requires access to the car.

Thanks Nick. That suggests that a second hand fob can't be, therefore, reprogrammed, yes? Not unless you had two fobs, from the same scrap car, which you then reprogramme your own car to match these.  :-\

I've got a couple of mint-looking fobs ordered for not much £. These, if nothing else, their externals are a massive upgrade for my own worn 19-yr old fob.

DBG .. if memory serves the reprogramming is done with the key in the ignition .. now I'm not sure which "bit" gets the work done on it .. maybe both .. but the key is certainly "IN" the car when done ... so the "by post" option would appear to be out (unless your postman can lift an omega and your recipient has a HUGE letterbox !  :) )

Ahh, not to worry. As said, I've got a couple of plips coming, I was going to go down to see Mark at some point, but the only weekend I was free was about the only one he couldn't do, that's  the way sometimes. Or he just really doesn't want to see me  :D

At least me now having these fobs means there's even more reason to get my old lady Tech 2'd, got a list of tings I'd like doing. Worth doing in the one trip, so all good  :y

2nd hand fobs are fine (if right frequency/model).

All fobs are (almost) unique, the car is programmed to recognise the fob.

The car is also programmed to transponder, although if its been anywhere near that POS frequently called "My Naff Code Reader", you can't reuse.

You you get a pfl car which had a separate blooper to work with a mfl all in one key?

(Say if you were an idiot who lost his keys but has the gear off a later car)

To answer that, you could (TB please correct me if I'm wrong) just move the Central Locking ECU/brain and all the gubbins from the FL car over to the PF. Then use the keys off that same FL and you're good to go. The transponder etc doesn't know what car it's in per se. You could fit the immobiliser to a Viva if you wanted, so long as the fob matches the ring round the ignition etc, then you're fine.

I keep flirting with the idea of fitting a FL CL setup to my PFL, to gain an all-in-1 key, but haven't looked into is as yet.  :)

Ah! Well I've got it started with the mfl main ecu and ring, but where is the alarm ecu then? :)

Yes, as long as its not a 94/95 with IR locking

As TB says, you'll be fine. Mine's a P, and isn't IR. To be doubly-doubly sure, look next to the sunroof switch, if there's a small black dome, then it's got IR CL.  :y

Generally, only M and N reg, but some P's might have been stuck in dealers for a while before registering.

Indeed, as TB says, registration isn't the same as manufacture date, so just to be on the safe side look for the little black dome!  :y

Finally got around to it. Yes, all works and now have a later all in one key arrangement. Lovely :)

Great, well done Capt Chaos  :) so for all us PFL types who maybe want to convert to the all in one key - what did you actually change?  :)

Well because I'm a key losing idiot I have changed the stolen the key, barrel, immobiliser ring, engine ecu and alarm module thing from the kick panel.
But I have no doubt that if you just swap barrels to get the new key, swap chips from old key to new and kick panel module, then ignition 2, click lock and it will sync :)
Simples!

That rings a bell but you need a working chip and key blade first :y

Occasionally I have had to resynchronise a key to a car by putting key in ignition, turrning to position 2, and pressing either button, whereupon the indicators flash twice and the key works thereafter. So if I am really synchronising car to key, not vice versa, can I put an old good fob into the right blade and transponder and thus obtain a good key without TechII assistance?

Tried it Terry, sadly all you're doing there is getting the car to 'remember' that key is already coded to it. Literally like jogging its memory. I've got a fist full of PFL plips ready to be coded at some point, but the concept of changing to the all in one is a tempting one.

What a shame! I too have plips of cars I have scrapped, PFL and FL. I hope the TechII man doing the recoding only needs to know the key code of the car  being recoded, not the key code of the car the plip came from.

I hope not, otherwise the spares I've got are useless! I think it doesn't matter, and you're fine. The Boy will know 100% though  :)

Omega RF remotes (ie, all of them except very early Omegas) use a rolling code, so every time you press a button, it sends a different code.

When the battery is removed (or shitty battery holder like yours I suspect are), or if the button is pressed too many times out of range of the car, the key gets out of sync of what the car is expecting, and you have to go through the resync procedure.

However, for a new key to be programmed to the car, that requires Tech2 or similar to get the car to learn the key.
