Headlight level control unit - Where is it??
« on: 22 September 2020, 10:41:43 »

My Xenon leveling isn't working, motors are OK and fuses too. So I suppose the control unit is wasted.
They are available on eBay as used so you never know if they are OK, but...

So I have tried to find it from advises here but there seems to be several suggestions on where it is mounted.
My car is a 2001 FaceLift.

Where can I find it?

Is it down at the foot well on the right side, where the central lock unit is placed?

I will provide pictures when I find it for others to see.

Thanks

The ecu is behind the front inner wing, above the suspension compressor.

Easiest to remove with the wing removed as it's mounted OUTSIDE the inner wing. From memory, you can see it with the headlight out, but you'll struggle to touch it...

Clips into a bracket, but it's tight and the bracket is only held in by a couple of screws, again iirc. :y

Ok, then I should find it. I did remove the headlight but couldn't see it from there.

This car had the airpump but previoius owners had removed the shocks and the leveling was out of order. I did remove the pump since it wasn't in use. I'll jack it up and take a look at it.

Thanks

Without the pump, you might just be able to do it without taking the wing away :y

I guess it is at the other end of this cable?

Is the reason for this placement to keep it away from heat?

Yes, that's it.

Location is probably down to it being the only space left that's near the headlights. Also, it isn't a common failure item, so accessibility is less important than say the oil filter...

Wheel arch liner needs to be removed in order to best remove the wing, so you may as well try that first and only remove the wing if you need to ;)

I'm not sure why people are saying to remove the front wing? When I took mine out I just removed the OSF wheel. Then undo the screws and spreader clamps (about 4 or 5 fixings) that hold the sh1t shield to the front bumper and wing, and pull the front of it down and out of the way. You can then pull the wiring and the box itself out of the cradle it sits in. Or unbolt the cradle and pull the whole lot out in one lump.

The unit is very high in the wheel arch - sort of underneath the expansion tank, but once you've found it it's not that difficult to get out.

The only time I have ever removed it was when I replaced the slam panel assembly.

Not suggesting that it isn't possible to pull it with the wing in place, just that without the wing access becomes a lot easier.

And, at risk of repeating myself, for clarity, the wheel arch liner needs to be removed before you can even think about pulling the wing (especially on the right hand side), so try and remove the ecu at this point.

However, if it's welded itself to the bracket then pulling the wing will save breaking anything. Bwtfdik :-X

Generally reachable with wheel arch liner out the way.

ECU is bombproof, so doubt its an ECU fault.  Loom sometimes fails there though.  Headlight ECU does have diagnostics capability, and that will tell you what it thinks is wrong.

Thanks, I have to find a Tech2 then.

There are some from China for about £500, are they any good?

I know that the motors are OK and the sensors looks OK with cables and they haven't fallen apart as they some times do.

Anyway it isn't urgent, the inspection haven't complained yet but I want to have it working properly.

Haynes will cover the wiring diagram as the electrical side of xenon system is fundamentally unchanged in the facelift.

Obviously some wire codes may change, but the pin outs should not ;)

It does indeed, i've had to repair the loom where it had been rubbing because it wasn't clipped as it should have been (guess someone had been in there before maybe after an accident repair), easy to spot when you remove the arch liner.
