General Discussion Area / Re: Now the Dyson. Again.
« on: 08 October 2013, 17:02:05 »
Yes I forgot Miele they are meant to be very good, never had one myself but friends speak very highly of them, if you want to spend a lot on a cleaner spend it on a Miele not a Dyson.

My first and last Dyson was an early model I think the DC01.  I very soon discovered that although 'bagless' you do have to replace these
at £30 a time. I knew then I had been conned.  Later the plastic just started falling apart. Lovely fancy clear plastic but brittle.

All I can say is the advertising must be very good if people still like them.

I managed to get a Type 110 Varta Silver Dynamic 85Ah in my 2.6 FL petrol.  It is a bit tight. £76:

In my experience the only worse make than a Dyson (filterless with filters!)  is a Vax.  Vax combine the crap material quality and over pricing of Dyson with stupid design and instructions.

Best makes I've found are Numatic and the bullet proof Earlex

Assuming it has dried, washing up liquid, neat.  Keep it on and keep it damp overnight (wet cloth over it)

For me rebuilding is a last resort - you lose every bit of software and every device driver you have ever installed after day 1.  Rebuild can be quicker than trying to find the problem though :(.  It is also more certain of a result.

Instead of a rebuild you might try, in order of ease
* running a full virus boot scan
* leaving laptop running for a while to see if the problem reduces - it may be index scans
* If XP press start button, type "cmd" in the search box, in the black window that opens type "tasklist /SVC" this will show you all the processes running under svchost.  Look for any odd ones.
* If Vista or Win 7 its much easier - start the task manager, on the processes tab, click "show processes from all users", sort by CPU (click the CPU header), find the process using all the CPU, right mouse click it and click "Go to services".  This will show you all the processes using the rogue svchost.  Pick any service there you don't like the look of, right mouse click it and click "stop service". See if you system speeds up or stops.  Repeat until the former. Once you know the problem service you can permanently disable it, assuming it is not essential.

All a bit quite for some reason or have I missed a recent post?  You know the subject

Aha it's not perfect, spotted some wear on the gear stick cloth boot. Try a black marker pen that covers it up. Must have been your polished nails when changing gear ;D

26.7mpg over 228miles, That's mainly A & B roads.

How often does everyone reset the system ?, I tend to do it every long trip before driving off or every few hundred miles.

I reset the avg mpg  the time, until I get a good figure :).   Anyone know what the MID's average MPG extended reset is all about - if you reset, it goes to dashes, but if you hold the reset it goes to stars.  Star reset erases all mpg memory perhaps?

Thanks that makes more sense.  Incidentally I cleaned my breathers at 70K, or rather I went to, but they were spotless.  I doubt any previous owners had cleaned them but maybe.

Watch out it doesn't block the exhaust I think that's what made my EGR leak and may have blown my cam gasket, all happened at about the same time on my last mig.
How does that happen  :-\
Magic ???
I have zero experience with Egr's so no idea if the theory is viable....? :-\

My 'theory' was that the blocked exhaust back pressure made the EGR leak.  That seems plausible to me.  I mentioned that the cam gaskets went about the same time and may have had the same cause, meaning blocked exhaust rather than the EGR as the direct cause.  There is always some blowby past the pistons into the crankcase, a blocked exhaust would definitely not improve it.  However a clogged and open EGR would increase pressure in the air intake and don't the breathers connect to that?

Anyway I only quote what happened to me - the cam gasket went  about the same time so unlikely as it may seem I remain suspicious.  I have always been dubious about breathers getting clogged enough to blow a cam gasket, everyone seems to treat that as gospel but I am not sure mayo has enough resistance to do that.

Nothing wears as fast as the buttons on a FL but my PFL air con button went at 60K and I replaced it. It nearly went again except the ac died first.  The steering wheel leather starting going about 100K but was still usable at 190K.
Leather condition depends entirely on how well it's been treated...

Changed my steering wheel at 235k for an Irmscher one, still as new. Likewise, Gear knob has done over 254k, still as new. Pedals are original and only partly worn, climate panel is also original and as new...

Treat any car like a skip and it will soon resemble one ::)

Excuse the fluff ::)
I can see your dainty hands reflected in the pic ;D ;D
