.. and right on cue, the XE's rear pads started making a grinding noise today. Outside pads have reasonable meat on them so a stuck caliper or rusty back of the disk, I suspect.

I heard that noise from the rear on the A169 Whitby Road last week. Coming down a steep hill at 60mph with a less than 90° bend at the bottom.  ;D I had to remain calm and assure the wife that it was nothing serious, just a stone......or something. Managed to get it home with anticipation, keeping my distance, judicious use of the gears and braking ever so gently so as to just use the front brakes.
Garage said there was absolutely nothing left on the nearside rear pads, and not that much anywhere else. Pads on all corners, £198, and off we went.

Might be then ... I did have an Astra G at one time.

I know that I replaced the rear pads of my Omega once when there was next to F*** all lining left.  :-[

OSR inboard pad should have a sensor.

Calipers are the pretty standard ATE setup, where the slider pin gets exposed when the pads wear.  And being ATE, non standard allen size, 7mm I think for the rears - but I'm sure you'll have 7 and 9mm allens sockets for just such an occasion.
