2.5 very reluctant to start in this cold weather
« on: 30 December 2014, 16:56:33 »

Normally starts fine, but been a little hesitant in the cold over Christmas. This morning had to go out early and it was -4. I thought it wasn't going to start at all, cranking ok but just not catching. Once it did go (5 mins of intermittent attempts) sounded like it was not running rich as you would expect. Once going all ok.

Anything obvious to look for?

Since its cranking ok i woul assume the battery is ok and the oil is in decent shape. I woul look at the fuel system. Try to spray some startgas in the hose from the air filter next cold start and see if it fires, if it does you have a problem with frozen fuel lines/filter/tank ventilation.

Generally not recommended, as can have an adverse effect on the engine.

OP - given symptoms I'd get live data readings for the CTS and air intake temp :y

Thank you both - the dash temp readout is working ok, but there is a separate sensor for the ECU?

Unfortunately my ODB reader won't talk to the 2.5, is there any other way to test or do I need a drive to Tech 2?

Many thanks

Separate remp sensor for the ECU, located on the coolant bridge next to dash temp sensor ;)

Oh, and paper clip test for codes :y

I'm down in sunny Dorset and believe Kevin is the nearest with Tech 2.

Is it only Tech 2 for this engine?

Humble paperclip will hopefully help ;)

Nah, think it needs live data in this case.

I have managed to get some data out of this car now - although as we have not really had sub 0C temperatures it has been starting fine.

OAT was 4C this morning and:

Coolant temp - 7C
Intake Air Temp - 7C

Are they far enough out to cause problems when colder? Or is that 3C difference normal?

Many thanks

Anyone able to comment on how this compares with their car?

Many thanks

The fact that 2 sesnors, one near airbox and other at back of engine, read -7C might suggest those areas were around -7C ?

Sorry, very badly written on my part 7C  (not -7)

Question is would the 3C over ambient explain the hard cold starting? I m guessing pro ally not.
