Summertime Coolant Change

Changed the coolant today. Put in the Vx Red Long Life etc etc. And flushed. well sort of, with the hose pipe ban and all that.

Errr... that's it. I got nothing clever to say about this. It's a mundane job, not very challenging or existing really... Just though I'd share it with someone (and get one more posting count in the process :))

I am a bit disappointed at the result though, the ‘Red’ coolant is actually light orange, and after mixing it 50/50 with water it is almost transparent – kinda spoils the visual effect.

Yeah, gotta do mine soon :( (tend to do it yearly, even with long life red, as although the hose runs clear after a while, the coolant soon looks dirty again)

I did do my fuel filter yesterday. Apart from an earful of petrol, fairly uneventful....

Clips come off easy. Didn't use any special tools, didn't even break the old ones....

Really obvious once you get under there and check it out....

Add some red dye. ;)

Under the car, in the rear, next to the fuel tank.

Funny you should say that... I was actually thinking about this, the orange colour is dye anyway (Ethylene Glycol is light green). The problem is that from my experience with using dye in the olden days (blue dye to make the coolant look ‘cool’), it looks nice initially but then it doesn’t last and you are left with a murky looking liquid. I guess they use special dye that can withstand both the heat and the other chemicals in the coolant.

round cylinder, and 2" diameter, 4" long. Tucked up just in front of fuel tank.

About £6 on trade club, around £10 retail for genuine Vauxhall part.  Its worth getting the 2 plastic clips that hold pipes in (few pence each)
