When I first posted I was not aware of the Total Vauxhall information - anyway I now have a reply which is not that helpful given the cost they want to do the job.
From DVLA
"Freedom of information request
Your request was received on 4 March 2009 and I am dealing with it under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act 2000. In your email you asked How many new registration for all Vauxhall Omega models by year from 1994 to 2003 and if possible how many vehicles are still existing for each year.
I can confirm that DVLA holds information falling within the description specified in your request within its databases. However, we estimate that the cost of collating the information would exceed the appropriate limit of £600.
Section 12 of the FOI Act exempts the DVLA from complying with a request where the cost in determining whether we hold the information, and locating, retrieving and extracting the information exceeds £600.
This represents the estimated cost of one person spending 3.5 days (or 24 hours) costed at £25.00 per hour. This costing is set out in the Freedom of Information and Data Protection (Appropriate Limit and Fees) Regulations 2004.
However, DVLA has commercial selling agents to whom we sell anonymised data. They may be able to help you with your request. I have provided a list of them at Appendix A. There will probably be a charge for any data they supply.
I would like to advise you that it may be possible for DVLA to provide the information requested at a later date due to the implementation of new IT systems, thereby bringing the cost of doing so below the appropriate limit. At present we have no exact date of implementation.
If you are unhappy with the way the Agency has handled your request, you may ask for an internal review. "
I cannot imagine that a good database analyst who knows the sytem they were working on would take more than a couple of hours max to write the appropriate query. Maybe I will modify my request to just one of the parameters to take it to £1 below the £600.
They do not say how many hours it would take of course.
I will have to go back on this. Ah - the good use of taxpayers money!!
At least - such requests will becheaper in the future - but we do not know when the new system will kick in.
