Follow up from the last thread is that the exchange unit from Vauxhall has lasted all of 17 days before breaking down.

CD unit has gone on the new unit but it's a better failure this time as the CDs don't load so the unit doesn't have to be taken apart to get them out, not bad for the second time the cartridge was out of the player.

Phoned the dealer this morning and another one has been ordered so I'll see how it lasts.

If the next one fails it will be a case of money back and an e-mail to BOSE to get their recommendation for another head unit before ripping the system out as there is no point in having a quality amp and useless head unit. Can't even point to the Philips system as being a let down because the CD player at home uses the same type of cartridge system and it is 20 odd years old and has never given any problems.

Still it's good to get the old tapes out!!

Keep us posted - i'm driving roound with CD SAFE at the moment after a flat battery. Radio & cass work fine.

New unit ordered Monday, arrived Wednesday, fitted (by the extremely helpfull parts lad) today. All working so far and been told if there are any other problems to give them a shout and they'll get another replacement.

Pinged an e-mail off to BOSE but I doubt if it will getthrough the system at work so I'll resend sometime from home.

As to the CD SAFE message I am now on my third radio and at no time has there meen a code supplied for the CD player as it takes it power from the radio cassette so it looks like a comms problem between units.

Not that hard to interface to the bose unit....it simply requires a balanced input which can be made using speaker outputs and a few resistors....

Do the exchange units look brand new or are they refurbished? If they're refurbs it would be handy to try and find out who is repairing them.

They look to be new but the fact that the last one failed after the second time the CDs were changed indicates a refurb. Can't say I've seen anything different to the original either in looks or the info on the decals. Sorry I can't be more informative.

The ouput is already balanced (thre bridge amps), it just needs potting down to line levels....Transformers are to pricey and restrictive on the audio range....

This Was the One of the First Things I ripped Out Of My Omega 2Litre CD i hated it Did not play half of my CD's and the quility was a little naff, i dont really miss the steering wheel controls. I cant believe how much a CCR2006 head unit costs you can get far better for a fraction of the price, Mine is sitting in the basement collecting dust ill keep it as if i sell the car ill put it back in.

I agree the cost of a new unit would have seen me going for something different but the £117 for a refurbed unit seemed okay especially as it retains the functionality of the all the controls without hooking up additional interfaces. Having the tape player is good for getting the old stuff out and getting peace to listen to it without complaints from the rest of the family.

The CD safe one is strange as I flattened the battery the night I was trying to repair the original unit, too many interior lights on, and have since had all the units in and out on a number of occasions but have only had to enter the one code for the main unit. The CD player is basically a slave unit attached through the radio cassette by the ribbon cable so you would have thought if there was additional security on the CD player a code would have been supplied.

If the amp requires a line out feed does that mean that there are different units to suit the application as I have not seen any reference to an amp for the non bose setup so surely there must be some amplification built into the unit. I admit that apart from matching speakers and amps this is one area where I am pretty weak but I would have thought that a standard unit would have been fitted and any adjustments required to suit the Bose amp would have been built into the loom. No amplification would explain why there are so many complaints on lack of sound quality though.

Spoke to somebody here http://www.car-audio-accessories.co.uk/vauxhall-ccr-2006-p1050.html today who knew what he was on about. He said there's two eproms containing the code, one for the radio & tape and one in the CD player. Sometimes, usually when the battery has gone flat over a long period, the CD eprom either loses it's memory or gets corrupted. He can fix them by totally disabling the CD eprom. He can also reprogram the CD eprom but said it's pointless as the problem can occur again. So basically you still get prompted for the code when you disconnect the power but without the worry that the CD player is going to go nuts again. Costs £15 + £6.50 return carriage (plus whatever you pay to send it).

I'm sending mine on Monday and I'll let you know how I get on.

On NCDC stuff, the variant coding (which defines country, language, Bose, screen type, telematics presence etc) is down via tech2...

Yes, but you have to use cool looking gold plated resistors in neon colours with water cooling to hold the tolerances,    From an electronic design perspective you are of course completely correct.


Speakers in a tin box, then add mp3 formating to further reduce the original quality, but have loads of artificially boosted bass, way way beyond the original source, then throw in an internal combustion engine and  inherent resonance..... 90% of car "hifi" aftermarket hype/sales claims don't stand up, its a major rip off.
