General Car Chat / My mistake? I fixed it

General Car Chat / I made a mistake ...

After advance warning of impending severe illness (MOT Cert full of advisories and a quiet word of advice from friendly Mechanic) I recently sent my well loved 2.5 estate to its final resting place.  On an 'R' plate and driven from new, meticulously maintained etc. etc. so parting was painful - however, I'm retired now and we all need to move on.  So under some pressure from The Management, and a reluctant "seeing sense" on my part, I agreed to downsize to a Volvo V50 - super-smooth 5 cylinder engine and still the utility of an Estate body, albeit somewhat smaller - it seemed a good move.  To cut a long story short ... darn, too late for that, I have found the ride 'choppy' and uncomfortable, but worse, the throttle pedal is too far to the left to make room for the wheel arch, presumably.  (I'm disabled and I find the pedal position causes me pain in my dodgy right leg).   These things weren't particularly obvious on the test drive and there was a strong element of "it's bound to feel different after the Omega and I'll get used to it" in my thinking.  Well, it did, and I haven't!  I'm sure the V50 is a fine car but after 15 years with the Omega there's no contest.  To add insult to injury, I reminded the Dealer from whom I purchased the Volvo and px-ed the Omega for scrap that I had not received the Certificate of Destruction from him.  His reply was that the car was not actually scrapped as intended but was sold at auction last week for £25 more than the price I got in px against the Volvo.

So now I've put the Volvo on FleaBay and I'm trying to find a mint 3.2 or 2.6L auto Omega Estate close to home in Hertfordshire.  I actually went to see one yesterday but only remembered this morning that I forgot to ask the Dealer why the security key for the wheels was not in evidence.  Otherwise the vehicle was in great condition for its age (2002) except for a "ticking" sound typical of a cam follower that hasn't got its oil supply.  There did not appear to be any oil on the dipstick so that might be a reason.  Best give that one a miss p'raps and keep on looking.  But I'm a picky Old Git so good ones by my standards that are located within a reasonable distance from home are not easy to find.

Omega General Help / "Rear sub frame mounting bushes ...

... showing signs of splitting" reported at last service on my R plate 2.5 petrol estate.  The car has done 100K miles and will be 11 years old in November, so I'm not entirely surprised.  I need the shocks replacing and thought I'd get everything done together, but garage man says he a) can't find a time/price for doing the job and b) it probably needs a special tool to replace the bushes which he doesn't have.  Without the tool, "it will probably mean dismantling a large part of the rear end of the car which will be expensive".  The front shocks have already been done and at a pinch, I could prob'ly do the rears myself (although not as young fit and agile as I once was!) but the bushes would be beyond my capability ... I'm reluctant to go to local VX dealership, so are there any words of advice please  :question

Omega General Help / Intermittent non-start (long)

My first post here and all I can bring is problems, problems ... sorry :-/

I have a V6 estate auto on an R plate which I've driven from new and which now has 88K on the clock.  Despite regular servicing, it's had all the "standard" faults - water leak, oil cooler, oil leaks from the camshaft covers (and probably more things I can't remember!) and now I have something new that's driving me crackers.  It's a problem I have seen reported on other forums on the 'web, but I couldn't find a specific reference to it here ...

On odd occasions (often many months apart) over the last three years or so, the engine has failed to start.  Sometimes after a few minutes cranking the starter (not continuously!!) it will spring into life and will run fine for months thereafter.  There's no smell of unburnt fuel when the engine is cranking, sometimes the rev counter needle 'jumps' initially before dropping to zero and sometimes it doesn't move.  The EFL doesn't flash but remains lit steadily.

On two occasions in the last year, I gave up trying to start it and 1) called my pet mobile mechanic to look at it and 2) got a friend to tow me to the local VX dealership for them to look at.

1) the car started for him next morning without any problem
2) the car started for them next morning and they reported no fault codes found by their fancy gizmo

I thought about what had changed between it not starting for me, but being ok some time later.  The only thing I could think of was that I had removed the key and operated the central locking.  I guessed it could be the immobilizer so when it happened again this morning, I took the key out, climbed out the car and locked the doors.

Unfortunately, when I unlocked and tried to start it again, it still wouldn't !!

So, to cut a long story sh ... ahh, too late, sorry.  I tried my spare key with the same result, re-programmed the 'normal' key and that didn't help either.  I then spent a while smurfing the Interweb to see if I could find some helpful information while waiting for the local VX dealers to open.  About 45 mins later, I decided to give the car one more try before calling the garage ... It started on the first turn of the key and sat there purring happily while I shouted rude words at it.

One more bit of information - last Summer, a bit less than a year ago, I had a problem with the car stalling at lights/junctions after about 20 minutes of driving.  VX dealer changed the crankshaft sensor and cured the problem.  (So I'm disinclined to believe the current problem is caused by the crankshaft sensor).

I feel that if only I could find out definitively what signals the ECU requires to see before switching on the sparks and sending fuel to the injectors, it might be possible to verify them by measurement and pinpoint the cause of the engine failing to start.

Others have reported pretty much identical symptoms in what I read on the web this morning, but the causes and cures are rather less certain.

So, can anybody help this desperate man?  Please?

I've been reading the posts on the site and there's a clear spirit of friendliness and co-operation displayed unlike many such forums (fora?) I find on the Interweb.  I hope I'm able to make some contribution of value to others.

Meanwhile, I have a little problem ... (see General Chat)  ;)
