Title: boot gas struts
Post by: prefacelift on 31 July 2017, 15:08:56
Hello people hope you're all on top of the world!
I have a 99 mfl elite saloon with the boot spoiler, the struts are getting lazy and I wondered if anyone knows the part number? and if the slightly heavier elite boot lids have a higher pressure strut?
Thanks
Steve   :y

Same, the boot spoiler is hollow plastic and weighs nothing.

Can't remember where mine came from for TBE, but was around £22 delivered for the pair.  They're fine, and a million times better than the originals that came off.

Tempted to replace, but as I've lived with them like this for about 5 years not much point in replacing them now.

Not to hijack but Is there a way to get the lid to swing open like a merc?

Or is that down to them having springs?
Is there enough space to get a slightly fatter strut for more power?

I would guess the easiest way for the lid to "Open like a Merc" is to buy a Merc   :D :D :D (sorry, couldn't resist  ;D)

It would be a handy feature, to give an assisted lift if your hands are full

i suppose you could fit higher newton rated struts, strong enough to push the boot up immediately.  or play around with the angles.  might be difficult to close again ;)

My saloon boot lid just pops open a couple of inches when triggered. Is it supposed to open wide? If so I will replace with these. :y

no thats normal.  all the marelli struts will do is restore the factory performance - pops up a few inches then easy to lift the rest.  you'd need stronger struts to do more.  apparently some aftermarket struts do less i.e. more manual effort needed beyond the first 2 inches.

That looks like it puts stress on the hinges more than the struts do when closed

Could be an idea to try though

Laziness or tightness?

You could have had my old ones, as they still held up the bonnet ;D

Remember, it only takes a gust of wind.  For the sake of £22 and 10mins work, is it worth having a widow and fatherless child?  You know I ain't much on the H&S front, but given it would be a severe injury at best, and is cheap/quick to do...

But you need a free hand to press the button (on car, or remote), so can't see the gain.

Many posh cars with keyless entry do have a system where you can wave you foot under the bumper, which I guess makes this approaching useful.

The Shaguar has powered boot opening and closing. Apart from not leaving sticky fingerprints on the outside of the bootlid (not internal handles, as its powered), I'm struggling to see the point.

Nope, yours is bang on Shack, assuming with virtually no effort it raises when you lift it, then naturally moves to the completely vertical position.

Yes, does that OK, but unlike you, I really love the auto boot opening feature on the new Mondeo Estate, and find it very useful. :y

I can almost understand it on a van like your Mondeo estate, but not really on a saloon :y

Find it very useful on the VW, but the boot lid on the VW feels like it's weighs nothing but the 3.2's feel like weighs a ton  ;D

If your Omega bootlid feels heavy, the struts are probably tired.

My MV6 one was starting to need an element of effort to move from the popped position to about 45 degrees, where the struts did then lift to about 60 degrees.

As I never really use the boot, I did the honourable thing and ignored it.
