Petrol Pump Filter in TANK
« on: 15 February 2023, 00:23:35 »

Hi, my Elite has been standing for 4 years, was running perfectly before I left it to sit. Turned her over last week and she started in within 20 seconds. Left her to run for about 10 minutes before I moved her, then stuck her on ramps to adjust the handbrake. She continued to run for about half an hour. Washed her down, she didn't look bad, turned her off and returned the next day.

Turned her over, but didn't start up as quick as the previous day, took about 5 minutes, she started and then I noticed she wanted to die on idle, so i kept my foot on the throttle until she was warmed up. It looked like she was going to be ok then after about 10 minutes she stalled, then wouldn't start again.

She's got fuel in the tank.

As she had been standing so long i thought I would check the Fuel Pump filter(in the tank) and for rust. It appears ok, hardly any particle of debris in the swirl pot, bottom of Petrol Pump. The Petrol Pump filter, some of the gauze looked clogged, so I blew it out with a light air line but I think I've damaged it.

Anyone know the Omega B Part number, went into Vauxhall Parts today and the bloke said Id be lucky to find one of them new(Forgot to ask him for the OE number). He also seemed to think that Petrol was so clean today, that I didn't need a new filter. I have a new in line Fuel filter so Ill put that on and see what happens, but I would like to put a new Fuel Pump filter back if i can find one.

If anyone has any ideas where I can get one, great thanks in advance.

Found these on line: (all seem to be the same numbers, less than a £5)

clicky link
there's at least 2 types of pump and 3 different filters  ;)
the pump filter protects the pump from debris ,the in line filter protects everything up stream (injectors etc )
as the car has been sitting for 4 years , you should check fuel pressure,
could be bad fuel, partly collapsed fuel line , pump about to die, fuel pressure regulator ,bad injector, the in line filter etc
or the poor idle could be something else unrelated to fuel delivery.

How much fuel?

1. It will be stale.

2. Less than a quarter/third and it won't start unless the car is level.

Thankyou for the response's to my message

On "Tank filter is gauze, just remove and clean"
I did that and damaged the gauze, that's why I thought I had better get a new one! and there was minimal amount of debris in the swirl pot.

On "How much fuel? /1. It will be stale. / 2. Less than a quarter/third and it won't start unless the car is level."
It was a low tank when I parked it up - on red, so I put £25 in, the Swirl pot was well over half full when I opened up the tank, so the Pump was well below that level, even on the ramps!
(I did put Petrol can of fuel in before i drove it to the Petrol Garage to fill)
On ",the in line filter protects everything up stream (injectors etc )
you should check fuel pressure, could be bad fuel, partly collapsed fuel line , pump about to die, fuel pressure regulator ,bad injector, the in line filter etc, or the poor idle could be something else unrelated to fuel delivery
"

Appreciate the CLICKY LINK too. The 3 Pumps in the Link Diagram don't look the same as mine?

Appreciate all these comments, thank you, once i put the Pump and Filter back and replace the inline filter I will check the other suggestions.

Here's my Fuel Pump info if that means anything to anyone? Maybe I should buy a new fuel pump, did test it with battery and it worked, is there any resistance reading on the pump I should check?

Bosch

0 580 453 976
12V  506    863 17
Czech Republic 2

From cross referencing some info on ebat, I came up with this oem no: 90442402 (is it right?)

thanks Vauxsky

A Bosch pump with that part number would be a starting point ;)

Also, worth checking that the pump hoses are sound.

Before getting too involved, have an assistant give the bottom of the tank a solid slap as you crank it. Can be enough to unstick the pump, but should be treated as a temporary fix :y

Hi Doc

the pump is already out, so not slap required and I tested the pump with a battery, but of course it could be starting to fail. Is there no resistance check I can do on the PUMP?. Good point on the hoses, need to check them.

On the diagram that Dave the builder linked me too, I said I didn't think any of the three were mine. But, on a second look I think mine is no 3 out of the selection.

The GM code for that on the linked doc is GM Part No:90509674 / serial no:90466019

The slap would confirm a lazy pump. Usually enough to buy some time such as if the car needs moving.

Omegas are prone to low fuel starvation, especially on slopes, and can require as three gallons to reprime the system.

This could itself be a heads up that the pump is weak.

Also, test the pump with a 12v source as the problem could also be the relay rather than the pump ;)

Might put a new pump in, has anybody removed the Fuel Tank Level sensor from the bottom/side of the swirl pot base. Or, how do I get the swirl pot base out without cracking or braking the plastic pot????

The petrol pump plastic support is removed! its just the cup, for a better word which is left in?

thankyou

Isn't it just twist and remove?

Obviously with all the implications of being 20 something plastic soaked in fuel.

Pump and carrier are held in with 3 or 4 plastic "tangs/fingers" that push outwards a little then the assembly pulls up
