Dry white smoke.
« on: 21 February 2023, 18:15:45 »

Petrol, fuel injected car showing p2197.

Would this result in a smoke screen :-\

100% certain it isn't steam... It's dry and there's no evidence of any cooling system problems or oil/water where it shouldn't be or excessive pressure etc. And no pressure, positive or negative, at the the oil filler cap or dipstick.

Car has done perhaps 1,500 since 2021. 21 mot was clear, 22 was a fail excessive smoke, EML on, a broken spring and loose mirror.

Only codes are low voltage/CAN communication errors due to low voltage and the p2197 Bank 2 Sensor 1 stuck lean.

Starts fine with a booster and idles/revs normally. No misfire or rough idle.

Excess fuel in the combustion chamber.

Presumably if the sensor is reading too lean the ECU will have "learned" itself richer and richer until it's reached some kind of maximum injection time and then thrown an error because it's still showing as a lean burn.

Forget the smoke, fix what's causing the sensor error and the smoke will go.

Also a hint as to make, model and engine wouldn't go amiss  ;)

The first, I can't rule out, but it has been sat since last July and it was an issue then.

The second, I will need to buy it to find out. But the fact that it isn't misfiring would suggest that it isn't flooding a single cylinder enough to extinguish the spark :-\

Engines that sit for long periods can get stuck oil control / piston rings ,
also cars not serviced well that get an engine flush also get stuck rings  ,
lots of white smoke ,cats can't cope  :(
I've had this to resolve a couple of times  :(
(strip ,clean, new rings , hone ) time consuming ,plus expensive new gaskets and rings etc   ::)

Have to say, there's significantly less smoke out of it today compared to when I looked at it in early December.  :-\

December vid is just like stuck rings
today video  a lot less  WORRYING  :P
you also need to factor in that a car (that you don't know what's happened too it) may have loads of crap/oil/water in the exhaust pipes and the engine may well be fine NOW but needs a blast , or has an issue that wouldn't cost the earth to sort .

I only mention "stuck rings" on a "white smoke" thread because i#ve been there TWICE  :-[
you'd think oil is blue smoke ,not always

that said ,i'm not saying buy it , or don't buy it  ;)
though you do seem to like buying problems Mercs  :D

Well, the belt squeal fixed itself :D

It’s cheap enough to be tempting, and apart from a handful of advisories, a pair of rear springs and a bloody good clean, it certainly has potential...

I agree, check it after an Italian tune up👍
Which would be after buying it >:D

That said, it revs OK, with no missing. Also I didn't reset the codes.

So are we saying that with a service, fresh fuel and a decent blast it might be viable :-\

Leak down test would obviously be invaluable, but those motors are normally pretty sturdy….

Cant see it being stuck rings, that only occurs due to carbon deposits or corrosion, you dont stop an engine which is operating ok (and if it was carbon it wouldn't have been ok) and then this suddenly happens unless water is getting in somewhere and then they smoke a good heavy blue tint.

White smoke is, and can only be, water from some source, that might be coolant but, could equally be a wet inlet or a wet exhaust.

Also, am I right in thinking that Bank 2 Sensor 1 is down stream of the cat, ie the rear most sensor :-\

Nope, sensor 1 is always the primary mixture control sensor, any higher numbers are emmission monitoring sensors (e.g. post cat)

So it's between the manifold and cat?

Yep, well, inbetween the head and cat as some setups fix the sensor into the combined channel at the exit of the manifold
