Ears are burning !!  (those bloody BOSE headphones)

For those unawares, I was rushed into hospital just before Christmas and had surgery to remove 2 jammed gallstones on Christmas Eve - not quite how I planned to spend the festive period.

Currently to and fro A&E and Doctors at the moment as we are trying to schedule an emergency op to remove offending gallbladder as we speak.

If I go a little quiet for a day or so, you know why - can take a while for painkillers to kick in, and the website tends to trigger and go down if we have reached capacity with low staff levels, as it saves too many shouting at us for radio codes at the same time

Anyway - thanks for the support guys  :-[   :)

Yep, hope all goes well Dave.
Know what you may be going through. Had similar problems last Sept. After the op (still in hospital) a mate came to see me and thought it was great to get me laughing, bloody painful :o
Mine wasn't gall stones but blocked bowel.
Best wishes, take it easy, it's a slow recovery. I've only just got back to work.

Used to help remove Gallbladders laparoscopically in my old job, shouldn't take long to be up and about.

I always used to ask the patients if they wanted to keep the stones. An old guy once responed with " Oh yes, I want to give them to my grandson" I replied without thinking "wouldn't he rather have a Werthers original instead" as he was lying flat in the anaesthetic room, he didn't see the funny side! :D

Good luck and hpe all goes well Dave

Speaking of things you might not want to hear Dave, I had my gallbladder removed in 2007. Went in for day surgery and was supposed to be done laparoscopically. Ended up in surgery for 9 hours after the surgeon severed my artery while removing the camera. I lost five pints before they managed to stop the bleeding!!

I ended up in hospital for 5 days recovering from that and I now have a rather large scar across my chest.

I can't even claim for negligence!! >:( >:(

I'm sure that won't happen to you though................ :-X :-X

To be honest, that doesn`t phase me at all, and yes, there are always risks with any operations, and if you trawl the web, you will always read about a higher percentage of negatives (as you have kindly posted) when compared with the majority of positive operations that have successfully taken place, as people will always shout endlessly about their bad experiences whilst the silent majority usually lie back and say "that wasnt so bad" when it goes well. It is very unfortunate that yours went wrong though, I`m thankfull that you were kind enough to make me aware of some of the risks involved, but I am more relieved that you have made a full recovery from it, as I would not wish that upon anyone.

But surely there is a far bigger risk in ignorance or worrying endlessly about it - surgeons are qualified, but the preverbial will always hit the fan at some point.

I was told on many occasions by female Nurses, that stuck gallstones are just about the most painfull experience that you can have, and any women who says that childbirth is worse . . . Has never had two large stuck gallstones.

So that kinda clinches it for me . . .

If only I could find a scalpel and a mirror   :P

You are quite right Dave. The pain is horrendous and anyone who has ever experienced it would surely opt to have the operation ASAP.

One tip that I really found useful is to cut fat out of your diet completely. It really helped me as i am sure you are aware the gallbladder assists the stomach by giving it more bile to digest fat when required so if you eat less fat then the gallbladder doesn't need to do anything! Plus you lose weight at the same time! :y
