Not enough info. Does it start up in neutral now you've switched off? Does it then set off in drive and only change up to second? After starting the engine, can you manually drop it into second and third before setting off? Did it drop into second while you were driving and decelerating?

The very first thing to try when an auto box starts playing up is to top up the ATF if necessary.

Has the ATF ever been changed ? My mates Audi had the same problem the first thing his mechanic did was drain & renew the fluid solved it straight away.

I think some vectra c/signum had the transmission oil cooler running through the main radiator. Maybe worth checking for oil in the coolant and vice versa.

Should be obvious when the transmission oil is changed.

That sounds Omegaesque to me......does the same apply to the Signum?

I've had the car since 2015 and ATF has not been changed by me. Mileage currently 96000. A quick Google seems to suggest the ATF fill point is under the battery box. The video I watched was related to the Saab 2.8 V6 which shares the same lump.

It appears the auto box takes around 6 pints of ATF.

I thought the ATF was supposed to last the life of the car without the need to change it.

.

Quite a few say " sealed for life" but best advice is to change it as it does deteriorate , a lot say that it smells burnt when drained. For what its going to cost it's the best place to start.

Agree with changing the oil and filter.

Every auto I,ve owned has benefitted from new ATF irrespective of the marketing mumbo-jumbo about being "sealed for life".Oil deteriorates and as you obviously intend keeping the car for the cost I would just get it done .

It is. But you'll notice that they don't define the life of the car.

I've just driven her around for twenty minutes and she has decided to behave perfectly again.

Smooth changes, all gears available in both manual and auto. She is 17 years old though and I am concerned her teenage episode' may be a portent of things to come.

I'll check out the cost of an ATF change. Local garage man charges £60 p/h INCLUSIVE OF VAT.

An ATF change should sort it properly.  :y
