Title: Thinking of a BMW.
Post by: omega18 on 27 March 2008, 20:34:27
Hi folks,

Not posted in a while but I wanted to see what the peeps on here think of the 530 E39 as a replacment for my ex-police MV6 which TBH is getting fairly tired.

I have seen a 530i Auto sport on a '51 plate that had done 76000 miles for 7995. Full leather and other toys, how does this car rank as a replacment for the Meega in your opinions?

Regards Karl

I would love a V8 but finding one round my area seems to be like finding hens teeth, at least i would save a bit on the insurance though!

Cheers karl

Hi
51 plate thats 2001 = 7 years old = another 3 years and no longer listed in Glass' guide and it costs £7995. and probably will fall into the £430 per year tax
I am sorry but I could not justify that much money on a 7 year old car.

Just my useless opinion.

Mike

They are good cars..Dont have problems like 528 or 540..

I know a couple of people who have owned Bmw's and driven them hard on a regular basis and they appear to be very strong motors. :y

That is quite a bit - how much for same age 3.2 Elite

I think the older BMWs were better made.

My boss put a high mileage on a 535i - pity it was cramped in the back, went well, a tiny bit quicker than a 3.0 MV6 I'd say

A valid point mate, just had a look on parkers and it does fall into that band from 2009 440 for 12months tax!
The Car tax system is totally backwards!!

Usual issue - when Omegas are too old I could not afford a decent BMW or similar.

Half the price for as good a car

My Dad used to have a 3 series and a 7 series back when we lived in South Africa although they were made in Africa they were rather useless, absolutley no end of trouble, mechanical faults windcreens falling out etc!

Been in a 325 which was tiny in the back, never been in the back of a 5 just really like the shape of them.  :y

We had a 52 reg 530i M-sport and I'm Sorry but it absolutely rips the arse off my MV6 in every possible way - beautifully built, great looking, significantly faster than the omega, more comfortable.

To be fair, it's as you'd expect for a car that cost nearly £40k new.

stuff the tax, it's only a couple of hundred quid a year extra and its more than worth it. ;D

Test drive and you'll understand  :y

a beemer fan myself - like Cem i would go 330 mysef ( ci clubsport) but do like the big 5`s  :y

you are however - as you know - paying for the badge and yes an omega 3,2 will be cheaper but try finding a decent late reg non police low mile one  :(

i do like the 5's myself.

Not a fan of the 3's think they are too small, and just don't look right.

I love the shape of the old style 5's

I think the 535, would just wipe the flooor with any Omega, its way faster not just a tiny bit. Its a V8!

My choice would be the 530i / 530d

Normal routine servicing parts are keenly priced, especially at Eurocarparts. If you need a dealer only part BMW are like most manufacturers, there are some nice and some nasty parts prices. Plenty of independent specialists out there. No rust issues like Miggy doors. Well made cars, but they do like a drink.

My dad used to work at a BWM dealership so I have been around them quite a bit,  my boss had a 520 then a 535 (12v - same period as Carlton/Senator)  I have been in both and driven the 535.

Size for size I have never felt sort changed in a Vauxhall (I have owned), but I definately prefer the older cars styling.

I think, whilst the BMWs of up to the 80's / early to mid 90's stood out as being better than average, the recent cars that I've sampled have been rather disappointing.

Interiors with acres of bland, black plastic which rattles and creaks as you go, uncomfortable seats, quirky styling which I guess you'll either love or hate, and reliability doesn't appear to be what it used to be either. About the only saving grace is that they haven't been tempted to cheapen their model range further and go FWD.

Give me the Omega any day, especially at half the price!

And I'm not even going to go on about the "burberry" image...

Get one by all means, but make sure it's a 70's 3.0 CSL, a 2002Ti or, at the very latest an 80's 635CSi  :-*

 ;)
