I've got a 2000 1.6 Zafira in with a power steering fault. The power steering is electrical rather than mechanical so i'm going to google to see where the fuses and relays are. Any of you knowledgeable people know where I might find then?
TIA :y

Ive found more info....your welcome to have a look, but dont know how useful it will be.

I've been reading on Google that if the alternator isn't kicking out 14v that the first thing to go is the power steering so I think i'll check that first. It seems that the power steering went then came back again and a week later its gone all together.

If it's the same as a similar aged Astra, they are behind a cubby hole in front of your right knee. :y

Definitely lose assistance if the fan belt snaps!!

I've checked all the fuses under there Andy and they're fine, also the fuses under the bonnet are ok as well ;)

All the info in TIS points to Astra G info :y

I've a spare alternator from a diseasl 1.7 Astra G if that's any use :y
-
I'd say that it's almost certainly related to the alternator output ;)

ECU reports battery at 14.2v.

Battery voltage looks good at 14.2v so sort of rules out alternator issue
-
battery 12.x car off
battery 14.x when car on, so alternator seems ok
confirmed with a fluke meter

Hi Pete.
Have a look at the BBA Reman site, it sounds like this system is similar to one on a meriva I had to fix recently, see if there are any clues on there to the typical faults.
iirc there is an additional signal wire from the alternator to the steering 'brain' to say "OK to take gallons of current", on start-up I recall a relay or contactor clicking in under the dash once the alternator was running....does the steering start-up at all?

There all electrohydraulic power steering setups ala the Astra G and H.
From memory, there is no fuse for the power steering feed as its a bit to beefy but the most likely cause is low alternator output but also check the battery connections as the PS feed is normaly bolted directly to the terminal and I have seen one or two that were loose.
Sadly its a little early for the one that can be talked to by Tech 2.

Ah, if its the EHS one then look on the suspension tower or bulkhead for a connector with some fat wires in it, on our previous Astra the chassis connection for the motor return current dropped off due to corrosion in the connector.
There was a fuse in or in-line with this connector, big one iirc.

If its the same as a 2000 2.0lt diesel then its a large fuse on top of battery. Power cable straight to pump, there is a connection block about halfway along that has the signal wires(these then follow the power cable to the pump.
It sounds like similar symptoms to my mates one and unfortunately that needed a replacement pump.
I seem to recall a recon pump was about £100 exchange(we ended up getting one from a scrappy for £30). There are 2 types one with fins and one without make sure you get right one.

Had a go at the wiring last night and its all intact along with the 80amp fuse so it looks like its going to need a new pump. Depending on the cost of the pump, the car might end up being scrapped ::)

Lol, have you seen how much a Zaf is worth second hand

This one won't be worth much. 108,000 miles, no service history, poverty spec and it looks like a golf ball its got that many dents ;D

Thing is, you would still get 700-800 quid for it
