Title: ex police omega up sale, is milage an issue
Post by: jase on 28 March 2008, 17:40:15
Hello all,

I may have the oppertunity to buy an omega that is is coming to the end of its time with the police.  It has done 145k but has been well serviced.  My question is how long can these engines last, is it worth buying if the price is right?

Many thanks,

i have heard that some miggs engines can make it to 250000,

they do look after their motors but they come with various holes and marks inside and out front where there kit has been.

its really your chioce but you need to look at the price, your budget and what else is around at the time see if you can find anything that is remotely like it and compare.  :)

Well maintained and regularly maintained are two distictly different things.....   ;)

Same as getting cheap tyres and tyres cheap....  Some Police mechanics I wouldn't trust with a meccanno set....

Also, they are/were a working car.  Like a farmer and his sheepdog, its just a tool to accomplish a task.  Some of them get really ridden hard...  Pays your cash and takes your chance...  Moved to genchat for a wider audience..

I would have thought it should be good for 200,000 miles before worrying too much about the engine.
It'll be more like brakes, clutch if its a manual and stuff like that. Lets be honest these are good cars and should be able to take some stick.

Plus dont forget the speedo is probably very accurate and not over compensated for so if it says you'r doing 80 you ARE doing 80, the rest of us are actually doing about 75.

Getting nicked for speeding in an ex plod car..... the irony....  ::)

as a mate of mine says If you want to know how hard/easy it is to reduce a car to its component parts, give it a traffic cop to use on patrol for a few days/nights.

And as said they do get some. Local dealer say the local po-lis get though dual mass fly wheels in the 3.2 vectra for fun - & they're expensive - £800?

That amuses me!   ;D

Two of our unmarked Vecta 2.5's were bought by the same local chap - one for him, one for her - in the mistaken beleif that they could perhaps 'steal a few' on the bypass and the local Trafpol would think the cars were still in service....

Silly lad....    ::)    ;D

Many thanks,

Jase, to slide this back on topic, anything is worth buying if the price is right.

With an ex Trafpol vehicle, please remember it is/was a working car, not a weekend plaything or pride and joy.  It can and will most likely have been driven hard, on the rev limiter, bounced over farm tracks and offroad where you would struggle to take a 4x4 sometimes, been bashed/dented (not all reported  ;) ) and generally thorwn around to within an inch of its life.

That said, Omega is a big tough car and can take the punishment, generally.  If regularly serviced, engines can take stellar mileages, just be aware of what you are potentially buying....   ;)
