Title: Darn microsoft
Post by: mantahatch on 02 March 2012, 19:38:53
microsoft has just updated my windows pc. it installed internet explorer 9 without asking and just shut my pc down and restarted it with no warning. I don't appear to be able to uninstall it, and the worse bit is I have lost the bar at the top with "file", "favourite" etc.

I can find my favourites but don't like the way IE9 does it.

Oh I am mad.

And I only just got used to using IE8.  >:(

You should be able to uninstall it - I have on my Windows boxes.. Control Panel->Installed Programs->Windows Updates or something like that, from memory (since I'm sitting at a Mac right now) :)

Yes, sussed it. It did not appear in the old add/remove programs (sorry programs and features) at first. After about 10 minutes the add /remove programs has been updated aswel and I have just removed.

Yippee, happy bunny again.

Thanks chaps.

Forgot to add, I am a bit of luddite, and it takes me awhile to get used to new things and get them how I like it. I probably will go for IE9...... eventually  ::)

Happy to have auto updates Cem. Don't want any nasty bugs. As I will admit to visiting a couple of dodgy joke sights.  :y

you can disable/suspend updates..

Where my PCs are on 24/7, I found the only sensible way to control updates is to let MS inform me when they are available, so I decide what I want to update, when I want to update, and most importantly of all when I want restart my PC.  :y

One day hopefully somebody will come out with a proper secure mainstream desktop operating system and on the command line I will be able to stop / start or restart a package using something along the lines of:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/program_to_restart restart

Linux rules ok.  :y

Linux, Apple stuff, Android, etc.. All make Microsoft's offerings look pretty 1990's 1980's these days, especially when it comes to package management and updating. :y

I agree with that, I should have said more secure.

Recent Plesk exploit problem is a good example.

Nah, Linux sucks.

Now proper Unix, that shows Linux is a toy ;)

Windows Update, considering the target market, works wonders to be honest.  If we all used Linux, the Internet would be a far more hostile place due to compromised machines.

Totally agree - never had any problems with Windows - (never used Apple or Linux) - never lost a hard drive or data although I do have 2 separate back up systems. Always used Norton for antivirus etc and never had issues with that either.
