Just had a phone call from my daughter to tell me I'm on telly right now (Virgin Ch 265), missed most of it but it's being repeated on the +1 at 10pm apparently.
-
What are you on there for? :y
-
I'm one of the sparks on site repairing what a cowboy f**ked up, my longest appearance is about 18 mins in when Billy is trying to drill through a joist with a crappy 10V impact screwdriver and I end up showing him how it's done with a 36V Bosch.

Ah. In that case, I have a kitchen cupboard with fubared hinges. Can't fix it myself.

What they didn't show was the cables the other side of the joist that he caught when that spade bit finally went through, and he did struggle with the two way lighting because we 3 plated at the switch ;D ;D
To be fair to the man, he does stage lighting rather than domestic work so it was quite understandable that he was a bit "rusty"....but he definitely knows his onions.
We (my oppo & I) went out with him a few times during the course of the 10 days filming, and he's a real down to earth guy.
He gave me £20 on the Saturday for a drink as that was my birthday, and on the last day of filming he invited us back to his hotel where he & the rest of the production crew bought us drinks all night long (out of their own pockets) to say thanks for all the work we put in (which they didn't need to do).
All in all, a very decent bloke.

Although he started life as a sparks, his job is to be the entertainment....he doesn't take the piss taking to heart.
The week before filming started we (along with all the other trades) had a meeting with Mark Millar (site foreman) to ensure that we had everything (materials, etc) in place and that we ourselves were happy with all the arrangements.
Mark made it quite clear to us that Billy was our "gofer", and we were in charge of all things electrical and to feel free to rip the piss out of him at any time we liked as it would be caught on camera and it was all part of the entertainment for the masses.

The Beeb covered our travel expenses and also fed & watered us, but we did the actual labour for free.
If it had been a paying job, it would have set them back £4700 due to the actual work involved (intelligent lighting, CCTV, etc).
To give you an idea of the complexity, a standard 2 bed rewire would have used less than 200 metres of lighting cable......we went through 700 metres of it.
Below is a pic of the bathroom lightswitch so you can see what I mean.

And I thought a 50m roll of T&E to do the garage was expensive..
Definitely not looking forward to the cost of rewiring the house, now!

We didn't really do it for recognition Oz.
We were in the pub the day the Beeb contacted us, and after several pints we decided that we were going to do at least one good deed in our lives before we left this planet and said yes.
Ironically, 6 months after filming I was diagnosed with the big C, and 3 months after that my mate lost his house in a divorce settlement......so much for f**king karma ::)

Cable prices are mental Aaron.
A year ago we were paying £27 inc VAT for a 100m reel of 2.5mm T&E, that same cable today will set you back £50.
