Title: Checked out my MV6. Torque Converter goosed?
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 09 March 2012, 09:34:41
Just a reminder of the original complaint. 3.2 Auto - Up at Joffs place in Swindon, the box was making an awful thud when coming off the gas from high revs, enough to make me think the gearbox was going to come through the transmission tunnel into the car  :D Then when I got about a mile from home, I lost at least 80% of the drive. Very high revs from a standing start would just get it rolling. So I limped it the last couple of streets home where it's been parked since. Awful, awful 'tapping' noise from either GB or bellhousing area, can't tell which.

I now have the old girl nicely raised up, ready for dragging out the tranny over this weekend, oo er. I have sourced a replacement AR35 so that's no problem - but I have questions over whether or not my torque converter will also be OK.

There is LOTS of ATF all over the underside of the box. I have no idea how that's got there, as I can't see any issues with the sumps sealing, or any other oil unions. It doesn't appear to be running out anywhere. Essentially I think the box might have emptied itself!

In any case I don't trust the box (had mis-meshing before) so the known good one is going on there.

But I'm wondering if also the TC is goosed. There appears to be noise from that area - and I wonder if it was in fact the TC causing it to lose drive. There was a loud "whirring" noise when revving it in gear, when it lost drive, I can't decide whether this would have come from the box or the TC.

Is there any way to "Test" the TC or obvious signs it's failed?

I am fully conversant with the procedure for Omega gearbox swaps, no problems there, but not particularly clued up on the internals..

Thoughts.... TC, or box? :y

PS - yes, the MV6 is staying an Auto, certainly for time being. I have something else on my drive (that runs on that funny tractor fuel) that is much more in need of a manual shift!!!

To be honest, if the box has lunched itself that badly I wouldn't trust the torque converter as it could well be full of debris. I'd change it anyway. Guess you didn't get the TC with the new gearbox?

Hmm, afraid not. Not sure what the replacement came from (beggars cannot be choosers, our resident gearbox expert is letting me have a known good spare, on an "exchange for post mortem basis"!  :D)

Sourcing a 3.2 TC probably isn't going to be easy :(

Bear in mind the part number was the same as an early 3.0.

Might just have to give our local breakers a call. Is a little bit of a worry, cos there's nothing to say if I buy another, it won't have a shady history.. :(

Says there is a 3.2 box "still to come off" .. so I guess the TC may well be still attached as well ???

Just a thought ?? Although Rotherham is a fair trek .......  :(

I agree 100% with that - ditch the old TC. Whether the fault was the TC eating itself or the box emptying itself of oil, the TC is almost certainly full of debris just waiting to kill the next gearbox...

You could always offer to take it off yourself ... for a suitable discount of course .....   :)

There is a chap not toooo far away who has a 3.2, I could pop the parts off if needsbe. I was trying to avoid having to remove 2 boxes, but if it comes to it, I may have no choice.. :y

Hurries out to ensure garage is locked ..... and SWTSMBO has her rollerskate parked in front of the door ... thinks about wiring a mains lead direct to side door handle .....    :)

Heyyyyy I didn't think of that, Swindon is even closer! I think I might wake someone up, pinching an AR35, though..  ::)

I have recently fitted an AR35 in my tractor so i have a TC laid around about to go to the scrapyard. It came out of a 1999 3.0 v6 with 79K on the clock.
I am near Torquay Devon but can get the TC to Exeter,  if it is of any use to you and you can arrange collection you are welcome to it.

cheers BD

A few years ago I had a Alhambra diesel which started to suffer from "flair up". While the box was out being rebuilt the TC was sent to these guys. I can't remember the exact figure but I think it was around 180 to have it recon'd. Might be worth a phone call

2.6 TC will be no good for a 3.2.
