The Elite 225/55/16 is not a very common size, hence a premium.

I think the Avon ZZ3s on the back of the tractor are rubbish.  Fortunately, they are nearly bald now (after 4k ::)), so I can change soon...

I bought Dunlop SP9000s for £80 a tyre (fitted) in November '06. (225/55/ZR16) That was by far the best deal I could find.!All the others were £100-£180!  (Continentals, Avons, Michelins...)   My first Elite had £180 Michelins on and I replaced them with Avon ZV3s which actually did the business, despite many reports to the contrary!

Round here, Tyre R Us http://www.tyresrus.co.uk/home.htm do seem by far to have the best deals! Better than etyres.co.uk and blackcircles.com. Although not so good if you're not a midlander!

I remember 'back in the day' paying only £40 for premium tyres for my little two litre tho. Think they were Goodyear Eagles and Aquatreads!  :)

Just had a look on which.co.uk at their tyre report. Often helpful I find! Steered me away from avons for the Corsa - well rubbish! https://www.which.co.uk/reports_and_campaigns/cars/reports/running_a_car/accessories/Tyres/Tyres_essential_product_574_70980.jsp

It all depends on what you want for a tyre as well as cost. Some (like Pirelli) are grippier but won't last as long. Others are quieter, Scary thing is some will brake many metres earlier than other! Some are more fuel efficient, other better in the wet etc etc.

They've only tested 205/55/16 and 225/45/17 and unless you're a member you can't see the best buys. which i'll summarise as:

205 16s
Vredestein Sportrac3, Uniroyal Rallye 550, Pirelli P7 (all £70-80), Michelin Primacy HP (£86)

225 17s
Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 £116, Bridgestone Potenza £120, Continental SportCOntact3 £109, BF Goodrich G-Force Profiler £101 and Pirelli P-Zero Nero £119

then it all depends on what you can get hold of!
have fun with your rubber  ;)

which is a shame cos ive had p6000s and p7s on my car ever since ive owned it and now 'times is tight' ive got to downgrade. even with etyres p7s dont seem to be very well priced:

225/55/R/16/W  PIRELLI - P7

Fully fitted price, no hidden extras.

unless i'm mistaken they don't do balancing either.

I know its each to their own ... but I would NEVER put "part worns" or "cheap & cheerfuls" on a car as powerful as an Omega.

At the end of the day the ONLY thing that keeps you in contact with the road are 4 little patches of rubber ... if those little patches go wrong your life could be in serious danger. We own and drive powerful motors ... please think carefully about your family and loved ones before scrimping on the most important part of your car ....  the bits that enable you to point it where you want it to go .. and ensure you get there and not somewhere else ......

From www.mytyres.co.uk. Well worth a look as they give a road test to many of the brands & you can then buy elsewhere if required. :)

We try and fit Budget New Tyres and usually ask for Tigars from the wholesaler. Tigar are owned by Michelin. The HITRIS tyre is assymetrical and is remarkably similar to the Pilot Premacy. The wholesalers rep tells us that the Eastern European factory production line makes Tigars and Michelins at the same time, true or not I don't know. I have the Hitris on my car and they are fine, then again I am not a rapid driver so as for grip, wet weather performance etc I have no idea. Look good, nice tread pattern and balanced easily, 10 grams. Oh and well priced.

I haven't bought part worns in a long time, however, did you change all 4 tyres on your car when you bought it in the first place? I can't really see the difference.  :-/  :)

Bear in mind that its not just the tread pattern you are buying, its the technology behind the rubber compounds used as well as the construction of the tyre itself.

Thats why a Michelin will last for yonks, comparatively speaking, but is about as grippy as a greased bambi on ice.....

Part worns - yup, been there as well, when cash was tight...

Yes, the tyres on your second hand car are also 'part worns' when you buy it.  The difference comes about when the tyres have had a clatter on a car being scrapped, removed from the rim and sold on as a bare tyre.  Its history is very much unknown and its weakpoints - damaged sidewalls etc - are hidden as its deflated when purchased.  The tyres on you 'new' secondhand car should be inflated and thus show bulges or problems more readily....

Agreed. Just saying that part worns aren't as bad as they're often made out to be. Just be carefull when you buy them.
Don't they now need a stamp or a 'sticker' of some kind to label them as part worn. A local scrap yard was done years ago for something to do with selling a complete wheel and falling foul of this. Although very recently another yard sold me a complete wheel when i was replacing a rim that my son had tried to turn square. :-X

There is meant to be a sticker on the sidewall when the part worn is sold.  Should be vulcanised on.  Most times, its just a dab of rubber cement and the label falls/pulls off easily....

Had to get a new front tyre on my elite estate a month ago. Searched round for same as was fitted but prices ranged from £140 to £170.  Went to Costco to get the Michelin but was told didn't have it in stock  but had other Michelin's in my size and would have to buy two with same tread pattern at a cost of £117+vat each. Finished up going over road to tyre centre and paying £125 for a Continental. Had to get one as old one had bulge in sidewall and was off to Liverpool the next day. :(

Even at £20 I would take some convincing about part worns. I know plenty of people who are using them without any problems, each to their own.

i recently worked in the tyre game for 10 years since leaving school and have had alot of experience in performance tyres,
i always use budget tyres myself on the road and racetrack (good soft compounds)
i,m sorry to upset some people but i believe most of the time you only pay for the name,
i would never buy michelin,s or pirelli,s as they are over-priced and the compounds are so hard they dont grip,
i,d rather have grip than a good name...

Agree with Marie about E-Tyres. Used them in the past for tyres on my Honda. Good value branded tyres. Would have used them again for my miggy but needed tyre that day and E-Tyres could fit me in till the day after.

Last time i did the tyres on the CDX (which are 16") i got 4 toyos and sure i paid less than £350 fitted and balanced

THe 17s on the MV6 are usually Avon ZZ3s i found them ok and cost £68 each delivered from Camskill then £10 to my local tyre place to fit and balance.

BUT the last two i got are Pirelli PZero Rosso Asimmetrico  fully fitted and balanced for £132 considerably less than retail price because i happen to know the Pirelli UK car tyre technical rep  ;)
