Post by: Wayne on 13 March 2012, 20:03:22
Hi Guys

my Dads car blew up yesterday (Mondeo Diesel)
i have spotted an S Reg gold VAUXHALL OMEGA 2.5 TD GLS with 125467 miles on the clock going for £600

any good? reliable? things to look out for?

it has full service history and looks in spotless nick

whats the fuel economy on one of these beasts?

If its auto, the gearbox will die, and economy is poor. Manuals are the better option IMHO.

The other killer is the 4.5k service interval, ignored by all, which leads to long term problems.

As that man above me says, Ive had 3 TD'd, first 2 where Autos, my last and the only one Ive been happy with was a Manual.

Auto's rubbish around town (27mpg), not bad on a run (cant remember the MPG), Manual 37 around town (my manual was an Estate with loads of crap on the roof, ladders etc and some heavy stuff in the back) and up to 40mpg on a run, when empty and driving on Cruise would do 45 to 50 on a run.

Oil changes are important, dying Auto boxes, leaky Turbo's are what to watch out for, if its an auto give it the kerb test, park 90 degress against a steep kerb, from stationary drive gently up the kerb, should do it with ease, if it starts slipping or struggle, walk away.

Check for nasty oil leaks under the Engine, and if poss ask the seller to leave it cold, so you can cold start it from scratch, feel the Manifolds for heat before you start in case the sellers cheating. Easy enough to check working glow plugs using a meter if youve got one around, 1 to 2 ohms each, pull the GP relay off in the front black box to check each plug.

Theres probably loads more Ive missed, no doubt someone else will add.

Chris.
