Serious question! Anyone use the TomTom "App" for iPhone as their choice of SatNag?
I need to know the pro's and Con's because I'm considering that route for job dispatch and management ;) Particularly interested in how good the mapping and routing is (is it as good as a stand alone unit?) and the traffic add on.
Thanks

i have a couple of clients using it, they say it's very good, personally, i use the car's built in ncdc system, and google maps/ free-nav on the gayphone when away form my beloved mig....
google maps works as expected, the free-nav thing is a bit less brilliant,... mostly relating to the incompetence of the user i suspect, but it IS free....
-
it works, but struggles with GPS reception, on motorways and high speed roads I found it fine. It really did struggle at times in built up areas.
Although I don't like screen mounted stuff, mine was in a bracket near the ash tray....
If you can live with it in you face on the windscreen should give better GPS reception.
But if you are going to be errr paying for the App, then you might as well buy a physical unit :y

I prefer the built in NCDC, but it's not fitted to a Peugeot Partner Van ;) ;) ;D ;D
NavFree isn't an option... The routing of it is utter shite and a 2 year old shouting random directions could get you there quicker ::) ::)
Cost isn't a huge issue in as much as I would still have to supply a mobile and a stand alone SatNav (which would be a TomTom with live traffic, so not cheap) so thinking of combining the 2 in one unit, especially as I can use a RMS on the gayphone too ;) :y
I have a sneaky suspicion that both "The Groomer" and that Gixer bloke use TT on gayphone :-\
-
Yes both fatties use it :y
-
A friend of mine uses it on his iPhone 3G (I think that's what it is, anyway - not seen it without a silly case on ;)) and I wasn't impressed, from what I saw it was slow, cumbersome and doesn't understand full postcodes, only the first half. Not a patch on my aged TT 720, anyway.
Maybe better on a 4 or 4S, but the lack of full post code support would put me off.

Indeed... Full post code compatibility is a must

There's always the chance it's something he's doing wrong .. maybe CG/TB/Tunnie can confirm :)

Seeing Gayboy soon so I'm sure he'll let me have a play ::)

Oi, shut it pin head! ...bloody students! ;D
Navfree can't cope with multi tasking. Hit menu, or make a call, route lost/re programme. Nfg
Tomtom re routes a 100 times better than ncdc which takes forever to work out you don't want to go that route, ie m3 out of London and not the m4 and the hammersmith flopover nightmare, although tt does have its quirks.
It's easier to input addresses, fat fingers aside, post codes are easy (with a space as well) multi tasks well, plays mp3's and fades the music for tt voice. Calls mid route are fine although it does have an annoying button pop up asking you if it should continue with guidance during the call, which I think you have to press while driving or your guidance is paused. Bit thick that one. Might be a setting I need to alter maybe.
Other than that... Oh, Nav murders the battery, so must be on charge obviously. Seemed fine in London/Fulham road south ken. Expected it to chase its tail in built up areas, iirc it did wander off position once in pessing rain in London, but other than that.
I rate it anyway. iPhone 4 using tt v11. There is an Newer version of tt available v12 last I looked, might be 13 by now. I think you've seen where mine is located on the dash? Signal seems fine there.

nice to know it's not just my stupidity that gives me trouble with navfree then :D

...well it is free, maps and guidance seemed ok ish iirc. The pay version might multi task. But what's the point in a smart phone app that's not smart enough to take a phone call?
-
Should add. Tt needs to input the cars stereo system somehow really. The iPhone 4 in built speaker isn't loud enough on its own. This also makes voice dialling an absolute sinch though, it works very well.

I know its a backward step, pick up a cheap Symbian Nokia, download Nokia Maps (free) with free Speed Camera and on line Traffic reports, then download Car Mode (Free) job done.

or get one of the new lumia range with windows phone and do the same, The lumia 800 is excellent

I happen to know Lazytinker has an iphone4.

The friend of mine has one of the Omega cassette units (CCR2006?) so uses a tape adapter - music off the iPhone interrupted by directions. Works pretty well..
So yours lets you input full post codes, not just the first half (like RG12)? Must prompt Mark to figure out why his doesn't, it would have made our trip to Wales much easier! ;D

I've recently got a Galaxy s2 which has built in nav which is way better than I thought it would be for a freebie :y

The problem with TomTom on an iPhone - ignoring all the problems with standalone units for a moment - is GPS reception is poor compared to a standalone TomTom unit. Like a standalone unit, it is reliant 100% on GPS, unlike a proper factory fit unit, that can live without it.
That aside, if you have to use a phone (any phone, not just gayPhones), TomTom is about the best I've tried. Copilot is good, but the interface seems more clunky to use, although maybe its because I've been a TomTom user for 9yrs.
Not used live traffic subscription, and my findings are based on a 3GS, I've been running TT on iPhone since about V1.2 through to V1.8, although my usage isn't extensive, as I would *ALWAYS* chose the NCDC over it.

Even tt on my old n95 had full post codes, although it wouldn't accept a space in the middle. RG126BY for example. Tt on iPhone4 no problem with RG12 6BY.
Does he have the latest version, perhaps?

Good question - I'll have a look on Saturday as he's over giving me a hand taking the Jag apart :)
-
Actually mine shows version 1.7 on the app itself.
Also there is an option for gps enhancer on/off. Not sure what this does but there is talk on the net of it using the phone network to aid start up times. I wonder if it falls back on this if gps signal falls below limits :-\
There is also a quite expensive in car holder to help gps reception as well.
And a PDF
http://download.tomtom.com/open/manuals/app_for_iphone/refman/TomTom-app-en-US.pdf
-
Also note, traffic is only available from the app store. So jail brakes a no no if you want that. Unless somebody know different?
-
All TomTom software/maps have had full 7 digit postcodes since 2005.

I agree I find it better than my x gayphone or googlemaps
-
Chris, hopefully we can have a play in a couple of weeks? ;)
I do have an iPhone 4 but this is actually for the guys in the vans. Got to supply a satnav (which would always be TT), live traffic is ideally needed, got to be reliable.
I also have to supply a phone. iPhone is prime candidate as best/most stable smartphone for the needs. I can also use it as a real-time management system at a sensible price ;) So thinking to combine both into one unit
-
Have you considered Android Paul?
May work out to be more cost effective than a gayphone. No Tomtom but plenty of other satnav apps out there. There's even a version of memory map for O/S or A-Z maps (A-Z coverage is pretty limited though).

Yes and no... TBH the cost isn't a concern (within reason) and I'm looking at iPhone purely based on my experiences of it's stability and the fact it fits the bill. There will be chargers in the vehicles so battery life isn't an issue and I'm not entirely sure the RMS is available on Andriod. Plus... I trust TomTom and haven't yet used another (non integrated) sat Nav that matches the performance and interface.
As an addition, I'm trying to get the RMS I plan to use implemented at the call centre too, so that makes integration even more important!

I guess if you have to provide a phone too, does make sense. Mounted in the windscreen area GPS reception issues should be kept to a minimum.
Also better having it all in one unit. You branching out now then?
Need any drivers in London? :)

Yep. Expansion is on the cards :y A bit of a "Speculate to Acumulate" time really. I'm not covering that side of London, but I'd need you available full time ;) I am looking for someone Hertford/Hoddesdon/Stevenage way as it happens! And possibly someone/2 people in the Kent area in a few months ::)
As for phones... Yep, got to supply one so one unit is the plan. Plus the job management system I'll be using is also a real time GPS tracker so I know where the guys are :y
Although they won't be allowed to stick the phones on the windscreen ::) ;) but they will be in a cradle high up in the centre of the dash :y

So going back a bit - Mark was over today so we looked at his TomTom.. yes, it works just fine with six/seven digit postcodes, as long as you pick the "Postcode" option from the menu. Duh. ;D ;D :-[ :-X
-
Ah, yes it's down the bottom off the page isn't it. ;D
-
Yup.. we'd have got much less lost on the trip to wales if he'd known where that option was! ;D ;D
