Title: breathers
Post by: derek89 on 14 March 2012, 17:13:23
On the rocker breather at the back of the engine the pipe goes into a funny shaped box then into the return pipe, is there any reason why it was fitted to 2.0 engines but abscent on 2.2 or can i do away with said box and plumb straight into return pipe as per 2.2

I guess you mean the black plastic box just under the yellow ring in this pic:?

My understanding is that the flame trap box helps to reduce the amount of oil mist coming into the camcover up that metal breather pipe. The mesh inside gives a large surface area for oil droplets to 'amass' on, and then drip back down into the sump.  Without it, more oil mist will make its way through the upper/inner chamber of the camcover and on into the air intake (via big rubber breather) or clog up the small breather jet (via the small hose) at the top of the inlet manifold.  If the small breather jet is blocked, then at idle all the breathing has to happen via the big one, and so through the IACV, which then clogs up and stops working.

I would recommend that any 2.0 owners who don't have this box fit one, rather than those that do deleting them.

I guess the 2.2s don't use it because they don't have an IACV to get clogged up? Can't think of any other reasons offhand, except perhaps that it was an afterthought on the 2.0s and they didn't like the aesthetics of it for the 'new and improved' 2.2 version.
