Buying that!
BMW 535i
125k miles, super smooth V8, i loved the tip-tronic autobox, best of both words.
12 months MOT, service history till 111k
I rekon i could beat them down to £1,800!

Took it for a test drive, goes great :D
Oil is jet black, but then again so was the oil on my 2.2 was when i bought that, before i knew about engines ::)
Brand new tyres on the front, rears borderline though. No scratches or dents, interior is great nick.
BMW 5's forum told me to watch the temp on the V8's as they are the weak point, it stayed stable :) right in the middle

Very nearly bought a 98 528 before I bought the mig.
The prices have bottomed out on the bigger Bm's, starting to get near mig prices.And its a lot of car for the cash
I think though the migs are a more predictable drive. My sisters 528 takes every roundabout sideways dry or wet

I put the 535 into manual mode going around the roundabout, did notice the back end steppin out :o
Put that down to low tread on the back tyres

The tiptronic will likely annoy the hell out of you, seeing as you don't like autos much. Not driven a 5 series tiptronic (only a sequential), only a 3 series one. Didn't like it myself.
Be aware, they are fairly easy to clock, though that particular model doesn't wear as well as its predecessor.
It would be an idle car for someone who has has a stroke, as your left side will do nothing at all - no clutch, no indicators, no full beam needed, as you'll have your idiot lights (fog lights) on all the time, simple because you're a beemer driver (and hence, according to Mrs TheBoy, have a small knob :o).
Not that you will use them, but the dealers around this way - without mentioning names, but the one at Oxford and teh one in MK - are woeful. If the car has been regularly serviced by them, you may be buying in to a whole world of trouble. I know its now pretty much fully depreciated, but without history, BMWs can be more difficult to sell on.
Check service item costs - it may be fully synth oil - and check that none of the std service items are too shocking. Check tyre prices as well - I remember my brother's 1998 540 wasn't too kind on tyres, though he didn't have it long enough to have to change them.
But if you like it, and its what you want, then do your homework, and if it all checks out, go for it. Obviously, I would have to ban you ;D

My brother has it on his BMW, he never uses it. Sticks it in D & leaves it. Same with his FTO, after the initial novelty had worn off it stayed in D ....... beside it broke & he just left it ;D ;D
I did like the ease of use on the C class Merc I drove recently though.

Decided not to go one pictured as it did not have a lot of history, but tempted.
I liked the tip-tronic, tap it down as approaching roundabouts, get some engine braking in, leave it in second, go around the round about, foot down and away, much more control.
I also noticed that it had a 5 speed auto :D

Remember, these are just normal autoboxes, slightly different software. They are not manuals with an automatic change system.

The software made it feel a lot better, when in D, approaching junctions, it would change down, giving engine braking....

had a look at these when you posted your first thread on it, and honestly i'm dangerously tempted myself!!
would need a T plate or newer for my private reg tho
with the right wheels, these look absolutely stunning!

I could comment on BMW dealers but shouldn't but I don't actually care here goes.
There used to be two dealers in Gloucestershire, Richard Counds and a crap one, the crap one had managers with friends at BMW GB and was losing business hand over fist to RC due to poor work.
THe rubbosh dealer complained to his friends and got the franchise pulled from RC - who were one of the original 4 BMW GB dealers. If BMW GB treat their dealers so shabbily why should you buy them.
Mercs came very popular in Gloucester, and all the repair business went to independant (ex Cound mechanics)

You can get any GM auto to do the same, just tap the Sport button when you want a bit of engine braking before the bend and obviously it'll drop down a peg.......

From what i can tell, all BMW's have weak cooling systems, make sure the temp stayes BANG in the middle all the time.
Ring up any BMW dealer and they will tell you if its had a engine replacement callback in the late 90's due to Nikal sealed bores.
I drove the 535, and it just had effortless pace, from what i hear, its best to go for post 1998 540i's as they have the 4.4 V8.
6.5 secs to 60, but the mid range pace is very quick.
Price of V8's is plummeting due to fuel costs, i do 400 miles a month, so fuel costs are not really and issue for me.

I think that model 5 series is the best looking BMW ever made, none of the others have the smooth look and the latest ones are just ugly, my X father in law had one and it was quite a nice car to drive, just lacked the toys that you get as standard with other brands.

Same here, i really like the look of them, its the strongest player for when my Omega gets replaced.
There are no other big, V8 luxo type barges which look as nice, and drive as well.

I used to have a 735i ........but i got bored very quickly with the 15mpg it used to do.......and the £70 every 3 days it took to fill it :o
So i flogged it after about a year and bought a veccy 2.5 V6 auto cdx.........less to fill it up and lasted me 4 days :y ;D
Tho i have to say, nothing went wrong with beemer in the year i had it........didnt even have it serviced ;D :-[
Tiptronic is a toy Tunnie........both my mercs had tiptronic.....ok so you will play with tiptronic to start with.......but if like me.....you will get bored and just leave it D all the time.......the only thing i can say about merc tiptronic g/b's (all manu's are prob all the same) is that they 'learn' how you drive so adapt to your driving style.
One new merc i had delivered from London, kept hanging about in the gears for a day after it was delivered.........hmmmm guy delivering it must have ragged it down the M4 >:(
