if you take to garage maybe 200£ or more
you can do yourself not hard job at all then save lots £££
if you add your location that would help

Thanks for the responses

I ran short of oil on a very long trip and it's clattering away like a can of marbles now :'(

I have a back condition so will need to get it into a garage for the work and I'd hate to get ripped off.

I can see this being expensive. If it is the cams and not a knackered lifters. Or it could be both. I'm afraid you won't get to find out until you take the cam cover off. However if you needed 2 new cams,16 lifters, timing belt, some gaskets and sundries I'd be very surprised if you get any change from 400-500 quid for parts alone. I'd also say around 200 quid for labour. That is a worst case scenario. You really need somebody to whip the cam cover off and have a look. Where about's are you? There maybe a member near by who can help

It sounds expensive and the car is not worth much more than £1500 to £2000

May well eb time to replace :-[

Don't do that just yet. Whip the cam cover of and have a look. It maybe just one lifter on it's own or maybe just one cam. Honestly as I said that was just the worst case.

Stick another 2.2 lump in it.

I think that's the route I'd take.  :y
