Having a look around at cars suitable for No 1 daughter. Having been given an extended contract in her job, she's decided that a couple of hours each way commute on the bus isn't for her & has decided that Dad should help her find a suitable car ......... ??? Naturally, I've been looking at Coursers for her. ;D ;D ;D
Choices between 3 pot, chain driven cam 1.0 or 4 pot, belt driven cam 1.2
Anyone with any opinions or experiences of either? I can't see a couple of hundred cc's making too much difference to running costs or insurance .................. (not that I've looked at insurance yet :-X)
-
whats a coursers ;D my daughter had a corsa ;D hers was a auto pretty sure it was a 1.4 not a bad little car
-

Most Corsas are pretty course compared with an Omega ... hence Course r ;) ;) ;)

Sure you don't mean 'coarse' there, Andy? ;)

I did! Well done .................
it's all the iffy spelling here ......... it's catching ;D ;D ;D

So .......
1000cc 3 pot or 1200cc 4 pot? :-\ :-\ :-\
-
Doesn't matter there all Chavvy!!!! ;) ;)

I won't be driving it ........... ;) ;) ;)

So .......
1000cc 3 pot or 1200cc 4 pot? :-\ :-\ :-\
Whichever one she can afford to buy and run? :-X ;D
I'd say the 3 pot - it has better mpg (on paper, at least), road tax is 1/3rd the cost (£30 vs. £95) and it's insurance group 2 vs. insurance group 5..
-
a 3 pot lol...you ever driven one...they are god awful

........
That's the most obvious answer, but if someone asked about mpg etc between a 2 litre 4 pot Omega & a 3.2 V6 on paper the 4 pot is the one to go for. But as we know here, in the real world, there's probably not a lot of difference.
I've seen reference to a couple of 1.0 3 pots cars having just had a new cam chain. Guess who'd be tasked with its replacement if needs be. ;D I reckon a cam belt would be easier for me to change if it needed it.
Good point re road tax ........... never thought of that. :y

As good as that! ??? ;D ;D

1000cc 3 pot or 1200cc 4 pot? :-\ :-\ :-\
if possible 1.4 or at least 1.2.. in urgent conditions a cars acceleration can save lifes.. :y

You obvioulsy haven't seen the cost of car insurance in the UK ;) ;) ;)
Admittedly young lads at work are younger than my daughter, but it's not uncommon for them to be paying over £4000 for 12 months insurance.
-
Left wing idea, what about one of the diesels? Newer 1.3CDTi or one of the older 1.7DTi engines? If shes got a fair commute then I'm sure she'll welcome the economy and extra torque on the motorway too.
-
Insurance groups 7 & 16 respectively.. might make them expensive for a first time driver?
-
Both the 1.0 and 1.2 are Gen 0 engines with timing chains. :y
-
We have owned both, had a 2001 1.0 and now have a 1.2 Design, only used around town but out of the two definately the 1.2, reason we got rid of the 1.0 was it had no go whatsoever, my wife was even afraid to pull out on roundabouts due to the lack of pickup, main reason why we sold it.
The 1.2 is an 05 and fine to be honest, looking to replace it next year with the new model but it will be another 1.2 or maybe a 1.4. Nice thing is like most Vauxhalls pretty reliable and when they go wrong not to expensive to put right. Tank of fuel lasts about 3 weeks on stop start, it really is the family workhorse.

Possibly cheaper with them being diesel though. Worth a try.

Ah! I'd just assumed .............. ;D ;D
So, are the timing chains a weak point on either? As said, I've noticed a couple of 1.0 cars advertised as having had a new one. :-\

The 1.3 is bit new for the intended budget, ;) ;) ;) and as suggested above assume that a 1700 (of either fuel) might be a tad expensive to insure, she's 22 so might not be too prohibitive :-\ :-\

Thanks Andy ............ exactly what I wanted, real life experience of either/both. :y :y

You shouldn't need to do much work on the engine if you get a 3 pot Andy - these engines are considered "throw away" and cheaper to replace with another!

But if they're throw away, that to me sounds like they'll be hard(ish) to come by if you ever needed one. :-\
-
In my (limited) experience of them, both are pretty robust engines. Neither have any go, unless you rev the nads off them. The 1.0 always sounds rough - sewing machine is a phrase I've heard, and quite apt. The 1.2 is noticibly more powerful, feels more refined, but still gutless.
Been having a mull over Corsas myself, as a Rover replacement, but the older models are horrible, real shitboxes, and the current one is out of our price range. I'd only have a diesel one, but our needs are different to yours.

Agreed re the older models, never even considered the newest shape - too expensive & nothing like the original car's remit of being a small town car
Miss Andy just wants as many mpg as is possible & cheap as possible to keep on the road. :y :y

And a girl ;) (Ruling or no ruling, I'm sure insurance for girls will stay cheaper somehow!)
P.S. "Andy" is a funny name for a girl .. how cruel ;) (referring to the 'Miss Andy' earlier .. I know, I know, I'll never make a stand up comedian ;D)

Andie, in that case ;) (FWIW I believe 'Andi' and 'Andie' are usual for girls, 'Andy' for boys. No idea why I know that..)

I'm a big ol' ogre, me..
ack! I've given away my position to the enemy!

Chains can be a problem on both the 1.0 and 1.2 but cheap and easy to replace ;)
I had an 03 1.0 just before Christmas and thought it was ok around town but wouldn't fancy a long trip in one

'Ben' (one of our young apprentices) is one of the reasons why we all pay ludicrous insurance premiums. He has an Astra of some sort that cost him £3800 to insure last year, needless to say he had an accident which makes this years premium over £5000 :o :o :o
-
Due to the insurance costs involved and the running cost. Would it be advisable to look at some of the makes? I know it's best to stick with what you know but you might be able to save "Ems" a few quid on insurance/running costs. Maybe a VW fox or one of the small Citroen/Peugeot tie ups. Even something jappycrappy make be idea. clit's aren't bad run arounds and if Daddies feeling flush (Em's give him that look, you know the one which will get you your way) buy the girl a VW Polo.
-
Chains are only a problem if there not serviced well :y
Not to hard or erxpensive to change.
I actualy find the 1.0's ok and nippier than you think!

Whose side are you on Dave? :o :o :o Ems already has her Dad wrapped round her little finger ::) ::) ::) ;D ;D ;D
I've not completely discounted other makes yet, but as you say, it does help with what you know & a Vx Trade Club card :y :y :y :y

But buying 2nd hand, how do you know how well it's been serviced? How good is a 'FVSH' :-\ :-\

Check the cam box state (through the oil filler), and listen for chain rattle when idling and revved.

Yep, I cleaned the EGR valve and throttle body on one on Friday and then took it for a test drive and it was quite driveable......certainly driven worse! ;D

The 1.1 Rover 25's - we always had one as a loan when mine was being serviced (as I had 3yrs free servicing) - seemed nippy enough... ...around town, get it in the open, you realised how gutless it was ;D

The 3 pot have knowen problems with oil pressured tensioners going loosing the timing and causing 200-400£ repair bills as they are nit easy to retime part from that there cheap fuel effective and nothing on a mig but what about a nova 1.0 or 1.2 :D
-
4 pot not to bad belt driven iv had 3/4 1.0l got on the chain tensioners IME :y
-
recently went thru similar, ended up with a mk4 astra..... 1.6
same to insure as the 1.4 corsa, but a lot more metal around my offspring....
(not without it's own problems though)
-
As said chains can stretch and the tensioners let go but the replacement parts are about £60 and easy to fit, I bought/sold a 1.0 last year which I thought was lovely and would have one if I had to. Phone rang off the hook with parents wanting to buy it for their kids due to being the cheapest insurance option!
-
Depends on your budget.
I got a 1.0 recently for the price of a months Omega fuel. :y
The £30 a year tax will only be on newer models, mine's £130.
Not the smoothest engine (hey . . 3 cyclinders), but good enough round town. Depends on the route from Bury to Oldham, but even OK on short motorway hops - no chance of getting done for speeding ;)
Happy Hunting.

It's a bit of a mix, a couple of short motorway sections & the usual slow crawl in town traffic. The lack of speed would be a bonus - she was a bit of a speed merchant in her Mum's 1600 Astra a few yeas ago ............... can't imagine where she's got that from! ::) ::) ::)
