Anyone see BBC 1 tonight, about why ITV Digital failed ?. It seems someone cracked the cards they were using, and somehow there was always a good supply of up to date cracks available on the Net. It also appears that a company based in israel company was involved, who just happened to be part of the News International group.
Mr Murdoch taking care of competition.

I new about the cards. Interesting.

The encryption was so weak, and just about anyone savvy enough was programming dodgy cards. Same as, for example, Virgin until very recently.
However, there was enough scope in the business plan for this. The real reason it failed was the ludicrously high prices they had to pay for exclusive sporting events - Premiership footie in this case - which was way more than the income, even if there wasn't dodgy cards around. Sky are singlehandedly responsible for that.

Going back at least 20 years when sky was analoge, I knew of a bloke (ex Royal Air Force L tech Tc / who worked on the ground comunications / sypher equipment).
For 50 quid, he would sell you a card that would give access to all chanels.
Sometimes it worked for a month. Sometimes it worked for 12 months.
You pay you money, you take your chances ;)
I was told that sky found out and "persuaded him" to work for them ;)
If he didn't, shall we say he would feel the wrath of Murdock and co ;)
