Title: to change the thermostat or not?
Post by: jonathanh on 29 March 2012, 09:16:08
i'm, getting quite a bit of fluctuation in temperature these days.  running quite cold on a long run but rapidly getting all fans on in traffice

normally I'd live with it but i'm changing cam cover gaskets over easter - does it make sense to do the thermostat at the same time?

If so, should I get VX or will pattern do?  and what gaskets/ seals or o rings do I need if it is worth doing?

thoughts?

I had a temp fault where the gauge wouldn't move at all and I had no heating in the car. Turned out to be the stat was stuck open......

Regarding the cam gaskets, I would recommend you contact AndyC on here and he will do you a good deal on genuine VX gaskets, O rings and sealant  :y

As said, may aswell change the stat the same time to see if it cures your fault  :y

Vaux-world sell  genuine VX supplied Wahler with GM part number stamped into housing for around £21 delivered and would be the same as you bought from stealers. :y

Sometimes you post good stuff, sometimes you post cack.   :o

Unless I read the original post very very wrongly, you yet again give absolute 'dangle berries' as advice, I'm afraid to say.

OP was asking about rocker gaskets, engine temp fluctuations and whether to change the water pump at the same time as the rocker gaskets.  There was no mention of changing the head or its gasket until you brought it up?  If the rocker gaskets are leaking that is the square root of fek all to do with the temperature fluctuations.

Please read the manual or in this case, RTFP.   :y

Please take more care Rusty.....   :)

To OP.

You can change the thermostat without changing the heads.

Point 16 is the infamous b'stard bolt.  Please feel free to do a forum search on the matter as there is more than a little info available on this challenge.   :y

Good luck!!   :)

OP did not mention anything about the water pump, read the first post "thermostat" he is talking about.
Someone else needs to take more care,  ;D
