my mate has an alfa....they are really nice motors and they dont half take the abuse that her hubby puts it through.
He puts things off way to long and then wonders why the bill is so hi when he takes it to get fixed.
little things like he new his brake pads we low and left them which then damage the disks. idiot.
watch some models have had to be recalled due to a faulty bonnet catch. it fails and the bonnet flips up on you.

Ow the joy of Alfa cambelts, variators, electrics and no boot space......
.....i guess its to replace the Rover
-
If you are buying an Alfa, it has to be a V6.... anything else just isn't a proper Alfa! ;)
Lovely cars, great to drive (when they work), but I agree with Marks comments too.

And the stiff ride, wrong wheel drive, interior rattles, over priced service items.......
Go round corners well and you can rev the tits off them.....if you dare!
Its funny because they are what I define as an artists car, look good (some), handle well, revvy but, not so easy to live with every day......
.....and lets face it if you wanted a toy you would buy a VX220 or similar....which does all the above properly!
-
I would agree with all that Mark, but there is a slight price difference between the VX220 and most Alfas.... granted there is a damn good reason for this! ;)

Sorry Mark, i have to disagree on some of the points.....
I am using my GTV as an everyday car now until the CDX gets sorted, so that's 700miles a week .
it regularly sees 7000 rpm and yes it does handle like a go kart :y i can get a full suitcase, sax, laptop and a load of other bitds and bobs in the boot.
A VX220 is a lot dearer, just as unreliable (both cars have electrics supplied by Bosch ;D ) and has less creature comforts, mine doesnt rattle or creak, nor does it leak like an seive.
Wrong wheel drive i will agree with, but passive rear wheel steer that allows fantastic levels of grip and is very confidence inspiring, i like the way the miggy handles, once you are use to the quick rack on the Alfa this is even better (and i loath FWD normally)
Variators need doing every 70-80,000 miles, cambelts @ 35,000 so in reality no worse than a miggy.

The Alfa V6 is part GM ;D

Only the very latest Alfa V6 is the Gm unit....
Your also comparing two different types of car, Pete is looking at a 147!
Variators need doing every cambelt change unless you want to live with the rattle as they regulalrly dont last as long as the belts!!
The boots are much smaller but, thats no surprise with a radial arm setup on the back eating into the space (the 147, GTV has double wisbones at the back which is probably worse and isn;t it a modified Punto chassis?).
You also miss my point....I cant see the point in buying an Alfa as a weekend fun car as it just does not do it really well!
Pete is buying one as a main car which to me is also far from ideal given the harshness of the everyday ride but I guess he will mainly use the Rover diesel.
But thats my opinion, if I was having a weekend fun car it would be a balls out sports car, not some hot hatch or coupe :y :y

Some of the points i thin we will have to agree to disagree on :y
On the GTV the bulhead forward is Fiat Tipo, rearward is Alfa, yes it has a wishbone set up which is expensive when it goes wrong but does make for some real fun when it is all set up correctly
As a replacement for the Omega it would be a huge difference i concede
