I want to say how appalled I am at the recent remarks aired here after the fuel decanting incident in York. To say they are in poor taste is a mild understatement & I am at a loss to understand how some of you blokes have continued to turn this horrible affair into a running joke for pity's sake! I also can't understand how on the one hand, the same blokes would go out of their way to help someone they have possibly never met, and on the other, mercilessly denigrate another human being dreadfully injured for whatever reason! Quite frankly, remarks of this nature do not belong here imo, the OOF is surely better than that? We are always reminded that this is a Family Forum and a Worldwide one at that! What sort of message does it send out to others when they read heartless comments and 'jokes' like these? I'm no bleeding heart Liberal, i've been round the block more than a few times and seen serious injury & death more times than I care to remember both in the Service & out and yes, 'gallows Humour' was the order of the day as a way of coping with it then, but the victim/s were NEVER disrespected. no matter what the cause. :(

Read the previous posts and I am in total agreement with you,Phil
Some peoples comments are in very poor taste .
-
i,ve got news for you mate, you are a bleedin hearts liberal, shit happens, and if you are a rather retard cretin then sh+t happens to you more than most :y
-
Must admit I was very shocked at the opening reply and some follow up replies. Regardless of how careless her act was, she was trying to help her daughter and paid a horrific price. Her daughter must feel terrible as well and assuming the woman survives, they will all have a reminder of that awful day.
I would have preferred the thread in question to have been modified as it did not come over well in my book. Freedom of speech is one thing but some people would probably reply differently if they knew someone injured in this way.
I would be surprised if anyone on here genuinely wished her dead but as Brikhead as already said, it may have been a blessing if she had, with all of the suffering of the whole family for years to come.

I rest my case where people like you are concerned! Oh, and you're definately NOT my mate! :y
-
I agree with the view that some of the remarks were heartless. My recent post on the thread in question provides my reasoning.
-
So, so, sooooo tempted to reply with "terribly sorry old boy, I am a little tired" ;D
But I know people would have a sense of humour failure :'(
Well, if the stupid idiots were too thick to understand what would happen, WTF where they doing messing with dangerous substances. Simple.
Same as those 'poor girls' who got mowed down by a train because a pedestrian gate wasn't locked, which apparently gives stupid people the go-ahead to ignore flashing lights and sirens. I lack sympathy there as well. If they weren't intelligent enough to work that one out, they shouldn't have been out on their own.
You either agree or disagree. Simple. No need to over analyse and start other threads. I won't moderate this thread, as its clearly aimed at me.
-

damn, fell victim to the word censor. Y A W N was what it said :y

It wasn't 'aimed' at you tb, but dare I say I detect a touch of persecution complex there? Oh, he's nodded off he must have been genuinely tired poor lad. I wonder if the people he's mentioned or their families are as fortunate? :-\

I find it somewhat interesting that those who publicly state that they have little/no sympathy for this woman are castigated loudly ..... yet those calling for the hanging of "Wellung666" in another thread are allowed free reign.
So it's "wrong" to call someone a cretin .. but its "right" to call for someone who has been punished by the law of the land to be hung ....
A rather large degree of hypocrisy creeping in methinks .....
At least TB is publicly honest in his view........
-
I dont wish anybody any harm. We've all been there where you do something and you say i new it was going to do that why did i do that. Yes it was a very stupid thing to do and again we've all said i could of been hurt or that was dangerous i shouldnt of done it that way. RETARD A person born with a mental condition and therefore has to work a million times harder to be able to do simple things (such as learn and communicate) that we take for granted. On top of this, a retard will usually suffer a lot of ridicule from society because people fear what they do not understand. The people who choose to call people mentally retardeded tend to be complete morons and cannot comprehend that these people have feelings and emotions just like anyone else.

Very well said on all counts :y

A least she didn't mix it with cilit bang like that daft rather biker a few years ago ::)
He was cleaning his bike parts in the kitchen sink when the fumes found there way into the boiler and it went "bang" ::)

100% agree with that comment - in fact you saved me the effort of making the comment, thanks
-
I've not really made any comment on the subject but, TBH, I tend to agree with TB and Entwood.
TBH, I don't wish that on anyone but she was being incredibly dimwitted ::) I feel more sympathy for the family and fire crews that had to deal with the incident ;)

That Darwin fella has it sussed.
In my opinion...... :)

If TB is of a similar mind then, TBH, I find that a bonus.
The whole concept of an individual who has, apparently, morphed from child to adult and failed to learn the basics of self survival in this advanced, modern, world then...... Well......
Darwin and that......

No argument from me ;)
As I said... Sad as it is and I wouldn't wish the pain and distress on anyone, it's hardly a surprise that a highly flammable liquid and a heat source ended badly ::)
-
So most of us must be retards cretins dimwitted and should have died from our mistakes then. Most of us have done stupid things in our past and be lucky to get away with it or as must people think it will never happen to me. That women made a very big mistake and nearly put her in her grave. Think back most of us have been lucky not to have be hurt by some of the things we've done.

I've never decanted a highly flammable liquid next to a heat source ::) More to the point, the stupid things I have done (and there have been plenty ::)) have all been my fault and my choice... I haven't blamed someone else for them ;)

Its called learning.
Either by the 'ouch - that candles is hot' or parents/forebears telling us not to reach out and touch initially.
If the individual concerned falls through the net and fails to take on board available info then - Darwin......

I couldn't agree more. There are some very sanctimonious people on here who seemingly have never made a daft error. How many of us have had a bolt off the mains through absent-mindedly failing to isolate the right circuit? I freely admit that I have! How many of us have jacked a car up, yet forgotten to place the nearby axle stands under the cross members before crawling under the car? How many of us have failed to depressurise the fuel system before unlocking the injector feeds?
These are all incidents in which, had serious injury or death been the result, we would no doubt have been written off on here as "retards".
We all make mistakes. Sadly, this unfortunate woman will pay (if she survives) for the the rest of her life with scars and pain. :(

As said, its called learning - be that by hands on experience or indeed, the ability to understand instruction by others by parentage, book, TV or ultimately watching things go caboom on hollywood movies.
But there again, thats not real life.
Is it? :o

Agreed.
And that lesson has been passed down via various public and well publicised means through generations.
Some folks accept advice, some dont.
My sympathies to those who dont.... :'(

and with any luck, any other folks who had not realised the dangers may now do so..... although I fail to understand how anyone would not know the dangers of petrol .... the publicity this event has had may well make others think twice before emulating her actions ...

I'm in agreement with the darwinists too.
Much as it must be a terrible tragedy for the family and person concerned, I'd hope any adult would have had instilled in them from an early age the deepest respect for things that will kill them. High voltage electricity, traffic, deep water, strong currents, heavy machinery, weapons, falling from a great height, other forms of sudden stop, fierce animals, fierce people, failing to protect yourself from the elements, and, yes, flammable gas and liquids...
Many of us flirt with any of the above and more, for it's not an exhaustive list, either through a job of work or as a pastime.
We don't generally end up in A & E purely through the observance of one rule: If you don't understand what you're playing with FFS leave it for someone who does, and if you do, be sure that you are 100% diligent.
So, sympathy for someone who throws that one rule out of the window?.. It's hard to muster, I'm afraid, especially when they attempt to cast the blame elsewhere as if we are not responsible for our own actions and the consequences thereof.
I really want to remain living in a society where the buck stops at me, because I, like many, have several pastimes which involve an element of risk, and I get deeply concerned about nanny state shutting them down because I'm insufficiently wrapped in cotton wool. :(

As I said on the other thread:
"In fairness, I think a great number of people are unaware that it is the petroleum fumes that are so combustible. Many wrongly believe it is the liquid itself that is flammable and that provided the liquid does not come into contact with a flame, they will therefore be OK."
Talk of Darwinism is plain daft, IMHO. This poor woman (and my view is hardening on this, the more I read such contemptuous comments) was clearly unaware of the danger of fumes. That she had never been taught is not necessarily her fault, though doubtless there are some on here that would say it is. >:(

Unaware.. Not a defence, IMHO.
We're all unaware of any number of things. The sensible leave them well alone for someone who is aware to worry about.
It should be pretty obvious to anyone in this day and age that there are dangers with petrol. If you're unaware of the specific nature of the dangers and how they might be mitigated, why wouldn't you leave it alone?

It sounds like a lot of people on here have never taken risks or made mistakes or never breaked with things they shouldnt have or is it that there mistakes are not on the news so everyone can call them names and take the p**s

I've made numrous mistakes. With some, I carry the scars, others I carry the experience not to do the same again. Some I deem most lucky to have avoided.
The woman who decanted the petrol within sniffing distance of a naked flame? She has learned a - painfull - lesson and others who contemplated the deed have learned the same lesson without risk of fire or pain.
Not taking the piss by any manner of means. Stating facts, blunt though they may be..... :y

Yes it should but does your instinct always kick in.

Don't approved petrol containers have to bear the words "inflammable, heavy vapour"?
Which might be a clue that decanting petrol near an open flame is a bad idea.

what did i miss ??? ??? ???

During my apprenticeship. In week 1, introduction week, we had all day, everyday, health and safety lectures. We were told it was a tedious week, but if we took on board the health and safety message we would have a happy and safe life and career.
My safety lessons had actually started well before this, my great school woodwork craftsman / teacher had already taught me a sharp blade, knife / chisel can never cut you if your hands are BEHIND the blade. A lesson I always observe to this day, which makes me a bit slow and cack-handed when cutting veg. etc.
What did my introduction week teach me.
1. Personal responsibly for safety - Don't do anything without making an intelligent assessment on safety issues.
2. Safety of others. Make sure not only what you do is safe, but is also providing a safe environment for those around you.
Now, I have every sympathies for this unfortunate woman and also the tremendous guilt and suffering her daughter must be going though. IMHO personal events like this that have tragically happened, do not absolve the person from their personal responsibility to be safe and to be safe to those around you.
If you don't understand the substance what you are working with, then refrain, or look it up on the fregin Internet, that is what it is there for.
A good example of this was the post a few weeks a go on that unfortunate bloke welding a diesel tank and and the poisonous gas, that has completely destroyed his life. He had the decency to inform others of his unfortunate situation.
My next door neighbour had asked me to repair an oven seal for them, before I would do this. I Googled possible glues and their effects / fumes at high temperatures. Next door neighbour repaired it himself, the same person that drove with Merc in winter mode all the time until gearbox complained, and went into limp mode and I had to sort out and his granddad was helmsman on the Titanic :o :o :o :o

IIRC there was an incident during the blockades when someone had a very lucky escape whilst using a hoover to decant fuel from one car to use in another :o fortunately they were outside so no lasting damage, but even so, a lesson if ever there was... :-\
We've all done some ridiculously stupid things in our time, hopefully we've each learnt something along the way :-\ Unfortunately this woman and her family are paying a painful price for not appreciating the implications of what she was doing. We can only hope that her injuries serve as a lesson to others, thereby preventing such incidents from happening in the future :-\ I fear that might be a touch optimistic...
-
terribly sorry old boy, I am a little tired ::)
-
Best go back to bed then :P
-
It was a silly thing to do but her injuries were awful & i sympathise with her & her loved ones. It's a pretty awful thing to happen to anyone.
Regarding the "dodgy humour" it's traditonally the british way to laugh things off & make fun of bad situations even if we care really. Not meant in bad taste but more of a coping mechanism. We've always been like that. No offence meant, Guy.

ffs- that makes the woman at the source of all this seem almost clever
