Well that's pee'd me off. How on earth can this happen? no no no I don't mean about lack of rain. I mean the fact the water companies can get away with it. I mean it's not like this problem isn't incurable. We've known for years the south east suffers from water shortage so why aren't we pumping from another region? Because to install pipes cost money. So rather than spend it the water companies impose terms and conditions on the customers. I feel like burning my bra in protest. Ops I've let something slip haven't I?

It is a disgrace. Pure and simple.
Floods alerts in Kent not that long ago iirc...?

Because since the water industry was privertised, the companys answer to the share holders who demand a dividend every year.
The water industy had had break all investment for years so when it was privertised, they was stuck with a water infrastructor that was falling apart.
So what money they had, a bear minimum went on maintenence and upgrades, the rest went to the share holders >:(
Imo, ALL basic utilitys should be state owned.

I am told it does not apply to my microtube watering system which delivers water via drippers around the borders (not Scottish) and tubs etc. This system is on timer.

What a laugh ;D Smell the coffee
We have just had 2 days of rain (about 1.5 inches in total). Since last May we have had only four other days of significant rain. Will there be a hosepipe ban here? No. Why? Because hot countries know how to manage their water. Drip irrigation, meters for everyone (and water is cheap) and conserving and using water wisely is a way of life.
I agree with the comments about water(and other utilities) should not be privatised. Britain should have had a national water grid before or as a condition of privatisation. Building more houses, population explosion and more industry and household appliances - even a schoolboy could predict water shortages just like there will be electricity shortages.
Will anyone do anything about it? No, short termism rules. The water company bosses keep paying themselves massive bonuses too and why not, they can't control the weather or leakages. Use the prison population to build a dam wall across the Wash and create a large freshwater lake and leisure facility.
You could invest in more desalinisation plants (only 2 currently and one of those is in the channel isalnds) but they are very expensive to run.

But a lot cheaper than trying to move water from the North to the South, apparently.
Of course, if water does get really scarce in the South people could move to the North, bringing their jobs and money with them. It may be a price that Northerners would be willing to pay. :)

Water companies have been immensely profitable with typically 15-25% profit, where ofwat have been a very weak and gullible quango. This is a disgrace for a monopoly, where you would expect profits to be in the 5-10% region. >:( >:( >:(
If we had a water grid, then it would enable you to buy your water from a number of suppliers. Now if that supplier sent it via the water grid and in the local area 30% was lost through leaks, then the local company would have to make up the difference at no cost. A bit of an incentive to fix your leaks, with typically 30% of water lost due to these and there would be real competition. :y :y :y
I have no problem with privatization, but two conditions should have applied:
1. No company that a Government has any shares in can own any shares in the water company as all that has happened with the majority of privatized companies is they have gone from being UK Government owned, the French and German Government owned. >:( >:( >:(
2. If they are taken over by another company, they can own all the shares, but they can't dissolve or amalgamate the company and they have to publish their accounts. This would stop the hiding of excessive profits, within bigger companies, which is going on at the moment. >:( >:( >:(
The water companies have spent something like £175bn on meeting EU water standards and £20bn on pipe repairs since privatization, which is why there is about 30% lost through leakage. Thames Water have tried to build a reservoir near Didcot, but were turned down at the planning stage. >:( >:( >:(
If your water bill is calculated due the ratable value of your house, then this is the only industry I know that can charge you the same and then ban you from using their product with a hosepipe ban. If you or me tried that as a business practice we would end up inside. >:( >:( >:(
If you are a small household and not on a water meter then worth considering as you should save money. :y
Where ofwat is weak they have allowed 5.2% inflation +3% bill rise this year. To make them improve efficiency and productivity inline with normal industry averages then this should be a maximum of inflation - 2%. Unfortunately all cartels like: water, trains energy, public services don't get more productive as there is no competition to make them do so. >:( >:( >:(

Last hosepipe ban I remember was pre-privatisation ;)

Last one here was 5 years a go. >:(

Clearly, we are using more water than we can store. As I've said countless times before, England is way overpopulated.
I vote a mass cull, starting with the retards.
-
>:( If they spent more time fixing the leaks i'm sure that would go a long way to curing the problem, the buggers must be losing millions of gallons a day >:(

We had a burst water mains up the road from my house, it was reported the morning it happened and within hours a water board van pulled up opposite and sat there for an hour or so. They then put a pedestrian barrier around it, as it was pushing up through the pavement tarmac and the kerb stone.
It stayed like that for almost a week. pissing gallons of water an hour and breaking up the pavement, before they even attempted to fix it >:( >:( >:( >:(

I know when I used to fix phones, if I wanted to dig a hole in pavement or road, there was a load of legal guff (dealt with by someone else) before we were allowed to.

Terrible idea, what a waste.... :o :o :o Now rather than do that, sent me the scotch and I will send you the same quantity of water, to be fair to you there is not limit, you send scotch in what ever quantities you want and I will match that with water for you, make in enough and I will send a tanker down...... :D :D :D
