I have a core plug blown on my 3.0 v6 12v. My mechanic says that I will need to change all engine gaskets and stretch bolts to repair the engine is the information correct. He is telling me both sides of the heads need to come off and engine stripped down is that right what he is telling me thank you

Who told you the V6 engine had 12 valves? If it was your mechanic, I'd walk way. No, rephrase that, run away!

Also what diagnosis was done to diagnose core plug? What age is your 3.0? 1998?

Who told you the V6 engine had 12 valves? If it was your mechanic, I'd walk way. No, rephrase that, run away!
If it's a straight six it could be an early Senator.... ::) ::) :) Easy mistake to make. :)

vauxhall omega 3.0 v6 24valve engine X30XE 1999 elite model. The mechanic said it was the 12 valve but on looking throught my book that came with the car the details at the start of the message are what the car is. I have water pouring from behind the engine as you pour water into the expansion tank and blow into it the water pours out or gets blown out on the passenger side above the coil thanks for any advice

Could easily be a faulty HBV (heater by pass-valve) which shunts water into heat matrix, much cheaper/easier fix.
Never go back to this mechanic again!

To the OP.
sorry but this sound utter rubbish from the mechanic - and he's trying to have one over you. there is no reason why he needs to replace all the gaskets if the problem is a core plug and there is a very good chance it is not that.
My strong recommendation is to try to get one of the mobile mechanics from here to help you out. If you are paying someone to work on your car, you might as well pay someone a fair rate and be certain he knows what he's doing.

If its pouring out as you fill expansion tank, likely culprit is hose at back of engine that runs from coolant bridge to HBV - its the short odd shaped one - a couple of pounds fron Vx :y
Recommend you get someone knowledgable to strip plenum, inlet manifold and spacer to investigate first.

Here is a suggestion:
Pop a hose into the expansion tank, get it to fill slowly so that water is also running out from the leak.
Then try to get a good torch and mirror, better if it is one of those dentist types, on the endof a little rod. No need to dismantle anything on the car but just spend 15 minutes trying to trace the source of the leak. Sure it would be easier to take bits off, but going carefully, observing properly you should be able to identify exactly where the leak is. The key point is that you cannot do any harm by looking at something!
More likely to be a rubber pipe or plastic valve rather than core plug to be honest.
I can remember which of the chaps here are mobile mechanics but i'm sure others will be along with names

Had something very like this on mine last year. Water coming down the back of the engine from between the v? It was the heater valve and washers. Even better, when I got in there the bolts on the bridge has corroded and almost come off on one side so was able to sort everything out before it became an issue.
If ti is that I think the new valve was £35 and the washers £10. Bit of a bugger to get to so probably looking at a couple of hours labour if you don't do it yourself. Some of the chaps on here will probably have it done in an hour though.
