Ok, title is obviously meant in Jest, but I am getting very, very frustrated with my TomTom.
It's a TomTom One XL Europe. I bought it around 4 years ago. In the last 2 years, it takes AGES to find a GPS signal, and is always dropping it's GPS mid journey at the most inconvenient times.
It's a BIT better outside the car, but still takes forever. Sometimes I Can drive 50 miles before it finds a GPS signal!
I've tried everything on the TomTom forums, tried a hard reset, kinda stuck now.
Shall I just buy a new one! ::)

Fit a CID.
Give me the TomTom. :)

Being the throw-away world we now live in, the answer's probably yes! I have the same sat-nav but haven't realy had any problems with it, it's a bit slow to find a signal in the house, but generally OK outside & in the car. TomTom does seem to have a problem sometimes with its sense of direction! ;D ;D ;D
-
Applying all the updates may help as the almanac data might be old or corrupt.
If the GPS is taking that long to sync, though, it might well be a hardware problem. Can it accept an external antenna input? Does connecting one help?

There is like a , very small socket on the back that looks like it could take an antenna - this had crossed my mind, only, I can't seem to find anything suitable, and the spec doesn't say it can accept one :-X
I don't really want to bin it, as it's really good when it's working :(

All portable units are shite, accept it and move on. Personally, I think they should be banned

So you've tested them all the eh? :o
-
Amount of people I've seen with SatNavs stuck to side windows, or directly in front of them on windscreen is staggering :o :o
TomTom units are ok-ish, never had problems with ours.

Don't need to, weak GPS reception due to the size of the units, behind thick glass. All units will be shite, built in units with a much, much more powerful GPS receiver on the roof will be better.

I have a Garmin bought maybe 5 years ago now. I accept that as I have not updated recently it will not know all roads ... but ... mine used to take ages to find a signal, especially when moving.
Mine improved dramatically, bizarely, when Garmin recalled it for changing the battery as they were faulty. Since I have it back it great. It still takes a minute or so longer when moving but that is only logical to me.
But as a new one ain't gonna cost millions, you'd probably better off going that route IMO

Yeah, seen that too. Illegal here to have it in front of you. Shame a law had to made for that, and people couldn't work out for themselves that having something stuck to the windscreen in front of you is dangerous

Built in may well be better, not doubting it. Just saying I am perfectly happy with my Garmin.
-
definitely happier with the CID and built in than i am with the Tomtom , or iPhone.
even without the CID the built in system knocks spots off the others. but with the CID.... it's rather brilliant... !
-
Problem I have is mine keeps spitting out the map CD in the morning :(
Also struggles with some places, found it impossible to find an address in Tolworth.
When it does work though, its brilliant!
-
sounds like you need a new map cd, or a new laser..... the challenge is using the right area name..... Tolworth , some roads i suspect might come under Surbiton, I used to live on Ellerton Road for a little while.... just off the start of Ditton road....
between there and Tolworth tower (is that still there?) could be listed as either....

My daughter has to use an additional antenna as her Peugeot has a heat reflective screen and receives no signal at all. The antenna just pushes into the tiny brass pin on the back of the Tom Tom and the antenna box has to sit in the bottom corner of the screen or behind rear view mirror (where the black dots are). It is magnetic so can go on the outside as well. The downside is that it was about twenty pounds so that is twenty pounds towards a new one. :-\

James, have you downloaded the 'quickfixgps' lately from tomtom home?
Mine after a while, takes ages to get a lock on satellites, downloading this 'fix' apparently updates the tomtom on where to expect to find them and its always a lot faster in getting a fix after the update.

Yep, I have, cheers TD :y

Have you applied the GPS fix update?
I'll also add at this point that if you have a heated front screen then that will kill GPS reception to the point where it is pretty much stone cold dead.

Not many I haven't used. All shite. In fact, my last TomTom is somewhere towards the end of the Aston Expressway, unlikely to be in one piece.
And any gonk, beyond tax disc and rear view mirror, stuck on the windscreen should result in instant death for the driver. Preferrably by shooting in front of their family, to quote the entertainer, Clarkson.

Whats wrong with furry dice and air fresheners ?

Dangerous ground ::)

I tend to navigate by my collection of road atlases, A-Zs, and memory - and a notepad if it's somewhere really tricky.
I've often toyed with the idea of a satnav, tucked into the very lower corner of the windscreen - but I'm far too bothered about leaving the bracket or a sucker mark in and my window being broken.
How fat are the units now, and could you theoretically attach one to a sunvisor? No good for me cos my head touches the roof anyway and it'd blind me, but just a train of thought...

Ahh 'dangle berries'.... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

James... IMHO, bin it and start afresh ;)
ISTR that somewhere offers Px on satnavs :-\ :-\
-
Had my TomTom for years now and it's perfectly Ok for getting to a postcoded location without fuss. Not so great for planning a circular blat or similar, and with the volume turned up it runs the risk of ejection onto the central reservation, but it does the job.. and it can be moved, along with all your favourites, from car to car. Last time I looked there wasn't really enough room for a NCDC+CID in my Westfield, no way to import / export addresses, etc. ;)
Mine has only ever lost GPS in a tunnel.
I do recall an update recently for a GPS time rollover issue on some models, so worth updating it to see if that helps.

Buy a bracket to attach to the dash somewhere, like a telephone handsfree cradle does. They are available for most models. Then no sucker marks on windscreen

Ideally, they need to be where it can 'see' as much of the sky as possibly, which means windscreen on cars without heat reflective screens. Which means gonks all over the screen. Which shouldn't be allowed.

Never had a problem with mine. Use it every day to get me around SE London going job to job. Also used it extensively all over Europe for holidays. Got Me to the south of Italy and back when I had forgot to pack the maps!
-
I've had a couple of Tomtoms over the last 6 years and they've both done what they're supposed to do :)
-
i have a tom tom 1 and its been fine till about 6 months ago and now its always a few yards behind so in strange towns i miss turnings.
-
There is a known bug caused by the leap year on certain Sat nav models, ensure its up to date or contact TomTom directly to see if there is a fix as they sorted my Dads out although it took a visit to them to resolve :y
-
James do you have the Solar Reflective Windscreen in your Omega? I had this fitted in 2 of my Omegas and I had the same problem as you, in other cars the unit worked fine and it was on here I read that this type of windscreen not only relflects the solar rays but any any GPS as well.
Just a thought....
Darren

Been running a Tomtom XL Europe for around 4 years without any problem.I bought the extra aerial connection which just fits to windscreen by suction pad and then plugs into back of unit.
Not really sure how much difference it does make but as said works fine for me.I stopped the subscription after the first year as seemed a ripoff and just accept it might not be bang up to date with its maps but gets me where I need most of the time.I would say it was money well spent.

I have an older Garmin nuvi satnav which works ok but is out of date on the maps now, lately I have been using the built in nav on my Galaxy s2 and have to say that for a freebie its pretty good, when you reach destination the screen goes to streetview with a picture of where you should be :y

If only google's street view was anywhere near accurate, that would be good. But as it stands, gimmick.
That system is utterly reliant on data, thus I don't use those...

Bring it to the Wycombe meet, mate...I'll programme it as 'entertainment section' so we can all watch you vent your anger and destroy it ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D :y

I have a 5 year old Garmin Nuvi that works really well and it was the cheapest at the time. I've never updated it, so now and again it starts telling theres a 50mph limit on the motorway where there were roadworks 5 years ago!! ::) That dosn't bother me though as I always have the sound off, otherwise it would'a gone out the window long ago!!! ;D
I mount it over the fuel gauge on the dashboard, so I don't get the telltale marks on the windscreen! ;)
-
I've been useing a tomtom one for about 7 years.
Never had a problem on any car.
Maybe it just doesnt like you James ;) ;D ;D

James .. drop it round and I'll put on the latest operating system (9.430) and maps (885.4009) for free .. only takes about 30 minutes or so.... . :)
