Title: Engine Replacement
Post by: Webby the Bear on 18 April 2012, 10:43:54
Hey up chaps, hope you're well.

As per my previous threads every job I've done has gone real well and looking forward to rear brake job this weekend. In the mean time though I'm relaxing and just been watching some engine replacement vids (I strongly reccommend checking out Eric the Car Guy... he's awesome).

There are a couple of engine replacements he does. The most difficult one he encounters is a huge Dodge (Ram I think but not 100% sure).

Has anyone got any interesting stories, tips, photos for engine replacement on the Omega?

Does the engine come out relatively easy or is it a pita? How do you do it?

Thought it would be nice to discuss :)

Cheers.

They come out real easy if you have no intention of ever putting them back in again!!  ;D :D

 ;D ;D Oh, it's like that is it  ;D

Actually, there is more room than you'd think.  Especially with the V6 lump, as it isn't particularly long.

Couple of tricks I've picked up along the way....

Remove the bonnet completely (only 2 bolts).  If you try and raise it to a vertical position you risk catching and cracking the windscreen at the bottom corners.

I prefer to lift the engine and gearbox out together, and then split them if required.  It's a hell of a lot easier than doing it under the car!!

that's very interesting, where do you tie up the engine mount/lift? obviously there's that ''eye'' on the pas. side at the back of the engine. does that have enough strength to lift then engine or do you have to wrap a chain or seat belt round the engine?

There should be a lift eye on both sides of the engine.  I normally use an old seatbelt strap wrapped through both eyes and knotted, then attach the hook of the engine hoist to this.  :y

I need a black one to replace the one we both used to pull engines out in the same day. I still havent looked through the set of belts though to see which ones missing. ;D

So as for removing an engine is it simply a case of unbolting anything that's attached to the transmission and any wires/leads etc from the engine and then hoisting it out taking your time?

is it something that anyonec ould do with a bucket of time and patience or is there a set procedure? :)

Time,patience....................................and an engine hoist. :y :D

Not that hard to do.Just disconnect everything and anything which is connected to the negine, then lift it out. ;)

I use a length of stout chain, joined by exhaust clamps.
No messing about with knots, and is easily adjustable.
When sourcing chain for lifting purposes, it's essential to get fully welded links.
