Title: Didn't know that No2 .
Post by: omega3000 on 26 April 2012, 14:31:44
Been looking at a few quotes from different sites ... namely this quote :

Quote
I have recently bought a Saab 3.0 V6 engine. They use a different engine number B308I as opposed to X30XE as used in Vauxhall applications. The rocker covers are the black plastic ones and have GM part numbers.

I have also fitted Vectra aluminium rocker covers though I have modified one of the covers so that I could keep the filler point in it's original place.
As already stated in previous posts the aluminium covers are much stiffer. I assume they are not as likely to warp as the plastic ones. The seal design is also different being around 3 times wider than plastic rocker cover seals. They are not interchangable with the plastic rocker cover seals.

Interestingly its quoted that the metal cover has a surface area 3 times wider than the plastic ones we use , so does that mean the base surface area on the rocker can take up to a 3 times wider gasket ..it was also quoted that since he used the wider gasket and metal covers he had never had any leaks . I know all about the do's and don'ts of genuine gaskets and clean breather's . Didnt realise that saab used the same engine or am i wrong or is he wrong   :)

Yes, Saab did use the same engine.

The cover isn't the problem, though. It's a combination of the gaskets turning to plastic and the breathers causing the crankcase to pressurise.

Keep the breathers clear and the gaskets will last well.

When I did the job the GM plastic ones fit perfectly.... maybe a tad loose. But can't see something that's not malleable that's 3 times the size fitting?  :-\

:y

Been a while since i took a cover off but if the metal ones can take a wider gasket i was wondering if that would overlap on the cam base itself .
