Hiya,
car has been in for a service today, and mechanic confirmed my fears, that the main oil seal is leaking. He's put some stop leak in for now to see if it helps, but he said the leak is quite bad :(
He's never done one before, and wondered if I could find out if its just a case of detatching the gearbox, or whether the sump has to come off too.
If someone can let me know, it would be appreciated, as then I can let the mechanic know and he can give me an idea on price to change it.
Just found out that the cambelt needs doing too, I thought it had been changed at 92k, but reading the book more closely (ie through the ink of the dealer stamps), the last time it was done was in 2003 at 39k - the car has now done 119k, and the book says it should be changed every 80k on the X20XEV.
Deepest joy....... ::) ::) ::)

40K or 4 years.
Gearbox out, flitch plate off. Ideally need to make some sort of guide to fit the new seal. http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=75585.0

cheers for the info, but still confused about the cambelt - the book deffo says that for all engines except the Y17DT and Omega B X25DT, that the toothed belt should be replaced at 8yrs/80k (Service Plan C, additional operations).
I'm worried about driving it now incase the belt snaps!
I'll chat to the garage and give him the info - I take it he'll have the various tools needed to do the job, without resulting to self tappers and Coke cans tho! lol
-
At some point Vauxhall decided 40k was silly and changed the interval to 80k.
They changed it back when engines started grenading somewhere between 40k and 80k..
(At least for the V6s, I presume the 4pot is the same)
-
ah right, that explains it then, they probably wrote to all owners saying "sorry guys, we f'ked up" (or words to that effect) and advised people to change the belts earlier.
Well I'm uber twitchy now about driving Morticia, but with the money we've just forked out on it (plus it needs taxing next week too), I'm tempted not to use it, and mebbe switch back to driving the Avantime until we can afford to get the oil seal and cambelt fixed - bloody typical, we're supposed to be taking the Omega to France in 5wks!
-
found this on Ebay - is it worth a punt seeing as its only been used for 5 mins? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/vectra-x20xev-cambelt-and-water-pump-kit-/140742858737?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item20c4ed97f1#vi-ilComp
Might try and do cambelt ourselves, Phill said it "looks easy"............ ::)
-
I'd never trust a s/hand timing belt kit - who knows the honesty of the seller? I think you can pick up a Contitech or Gates kit for near £50 - and renew the water pump at the same time, since it's driven by the cam belt on the 4pot.
-
Not too bad a job to do. Personally wouldn't trust a 2nd hand kit because you only have the sellers word that it was only fitted for 5 mins ;) But sometimes needs must
-
yer, normally I wouldnt trust 2nd hand stuff, but pretty skint now after this week (tax+LPG service & repairs+engine service & repairs+full tank of LPG = £514!!), so trying to save a few pennies.
Phill said he'll have a look at the belt and check its condition before we do anything else, if it *looks* ok, we might just take a flyer on it and leave it until after holiday, but we'll be doing about 2000 miles over 12 days ......
Is this the seal I need? It lists 'Omega B Caravan 2.0 X20XEV' in the "this is what it fits list"

has consideration been given to the fact the seal might be leaking due to blocked crankcase breathers? Eg large pipe to flametrap. Notorious on 2.0
how is the camcover gasket / plug wells?
Clare re the cambelt it's on seriously borrowed time. You won't be able to jusge condition visually. It's usually the rollers which fail internally.
This weekend I am hugely busy, but the 2.0 cam belt is not a bad job. If it's urgent for your hols, I can spare you an hour, bring a cambelt kit down on Sunday and I'll sort it for liquid currency...

TBH, the mechanic at the garage didnt say owt about blocked breathers, so cheers for the heads up on that.
I've got another car I can use, and tbh the weather forecast for Sunday is shocking and we've got nowhere to work undercover, so if you wanted to leave it for another weekend and let me know your choice of liquid currency and we'll sort summat - thanks!! :y

Fine by me :y
The breathers are a classic culprit on these. If we leave 'till another weekend, then we can look at these too :y
-
thats really kind of you to offer to help out, I hope I'm not putting you to any trouble?
Are you local to me then? I'm near J27 of the M1.
thanks in advance :)

Hi James,
just wondering what weekend you'd be free to pop over and have a techy sesh on my Omega? I'm just in the process of sourcing cambelt kit and waterpump (unless you can supply them cheaper then FleaBay)?
I'll make sure the kettle is in full working order and a that there's a good supply of bacon cobs ;)
cheers
Claire

Hiya claire, how about not this weekend, but next? :)
I would source parts from buypartsby.co.uk, give them a try :)
-
Highly recommend buypartsby.co.uk. Just got my Cambelt kit and waterpump from them. Extremely helpful and friendly. Plus for contitech timing kit, OE water pump and aux belt, with next day delivery was about £120. Cannot complain at that :)

yep, next weekend sounds brill, let me know what day and I'll get the kettle on :)
I've got a few good contacts for parts, so will do some ringing round.
Really appreciate this James :y
-
been having a ring around today, and the best deal I can get on both parts is from Sutton Auto Factors in Bullwell (Nottingham).
Cambelt kit with rollers £47.87 + VAT, and water pumps at £16.54 + VAT or £19.76 + VAT for a better 'branded' one. That comes to £81.13 if I go for the better water pump (inc VAT), which to me sounds pretty good value.
If anyone knows of better prices, then please shout up, otherwise I'll head off to Nottingham in day or so to pick these up.

The only thing I would add, is not to get the camcover gasket from a factor - get it from a dealer. non-genuine items tend to fail quite quickly, even with clean breathers...
Definitely get the better quality water pump..
In response to your PM - Saturday, if that's ok? :y
-
Is it strange that I am actually looking forward to playing with a 4 banger? :D

lol !!!!!! yep, Saturday fine :)
Just had heart failure!! Rang Vauxhall for cam cover gasket, £32 inc VAT !!!! :o I can get a non
genuine for about £11 inc VAT - it had better be worth it!!
-
Thats 'cause they have quoted you retail price on that gasket Clair. I can do a bit better at £24.00 Inc VAT for the Gasket and the O rings are £0.26 each inc VAT
Cheers
Andy
-
rats, just got home with all the parts, but I did show them my VODC Vauxhall Trade Club card which brought the gasket down to £27.66 inc VAT.
So, I have:
Cambelt kit inc rollers
Water pump
Aux Belt
Vxl Cam Cover Gasket
Total inc VAT and postage (Aux belt off Ebay) about £120, so not bad really.
Roll on Saturday, hope the weather improves!!
Claire
-
They gave you 10 O rings with that gasket, right? ::)
You also forgot the beer :P (kidding, of course!!)
I too hope the weather improves. Still, you can always hold a brolly over me ;D
-
didnt see any o-rings..................
weather forecast is ok for up here tomorrow, have a good journey up, and remember not to come too fast down my road incase the speed camera van is there (30 limit where I live).
laters,
Claire

didnt see any o-rings..................
You might want to check (and/or hope James has some spare!) because there's no point doing the job without 'em...
-
I'm still coming. Did you see me PM ref 4 pot camlock? I will try and get one at local factors...
-
yep, got one ordered, picking it up at 11.30am :)
Seeya later! :D
-
wonderful! Leaving in next hour probs. Need a coffee first. 3 hrs sleep, whoops! Looking forward to some tinkering :y
-
cheeky q, do you have a vx dealer you could swing by and get ten camcover o rings? Only few pennies each :)
-
I'll ring the main dealer in Ilkeston and see if they've got any.
I needent have got up so early then today! lol
Seeya this afternoon - the Avi is parked out front, so just pull up behind her (driveway gates are open, and Morticia is on the drive ready to receive you) :)
-
