Post by: Del Boy on 28 April 2012, 21:43:38

I was a passenger in one of these a year back or so, and it had the manual box. I remember at the time thinking it was FQ, and 'uh oh, this will probably beat an omega!'. The gears seemed quite short though and it had a horrible diesel 'blah' noise, if that makes sense?

YER WHAT???? I CAN'T HEAR A THING ............... IS THAT A TAXI OUTSIDE?  ::) ::) ::) ::) Trouble with diseasals, is that everyone outside the car still knows it's diesel even if they are a lot faster etc than they used to be.  ;) ;)

My little Ibiza is a 1600 Diesel. It's like a hot hatch from the 90's. Being a sport it goes as fast round the corners as it does in a straight line. I've had numerous VAG diesels and have to say I've liked them all. Also keep it south of 70 and I get a proven 67+MPG. However it's small and hard and that's why I've got the Mig. To remind me what comfort is all about.

A lot of modern 6 pot diesels are very quiet these days, and they make a good noise too  :y

Won't be long and they'll be nearly as quiet as a petrol I reckon. 4 pot diesels are still loud though, the Golf included, however the power makes up for the noise :D

Thing is what does it matter if everyone outside knows its a diesel?  :-\

Lets face it, if we were worried about what people thought of our car, none of us would be driving an Omega  ;D

Might be worth looking into  ;)

My old man and lady have just blown 20 grand on a Citroen Zx with the 1.6 diesel and stop / start.
No road tax
Pretty nippy (110 bhp) and a 7 or 8 speed flappy box.
If the thing was anymore economical, it would be making the diesel  :o
Currently doing around 65 mpg with most of that in the town  ::)
Bloody nice to drive too

Hate to say this about a modern Citroen but it is a very nice car  :y

Diesel engines are 'wrong' in passenger cars.
 :y

Plus anyone who buys a modern diesel and just uses it to pootle around town is throwing money away due to increased service costs and decreased engine life.

Also every time I've used 'Google maps' to plan a route the estimated fuel costs are always more in a diesel vehicle.

What are the actual advantages of a diesel engine? Any one care to enlighten me!

Diesel no more to service than petrol these days. More MPG however some of those gains are being off set by the price difference between petrol and diesel. Far lazier drive than petrol having more torque where you need it. Price of new diesel cars isn't that much more than petrol version to buy these days. You do have to do a fair amount of miles to make the costs work but not the mega mileage it use to be.

The parts and costs to do a service are roughly the same but diesels can require servicing twice as often as petrol cars.

I'd disagree on the second point too my petrol v6 manual only really needs two gears, 2nd and 4th seem to be able to do every thing required, or if laziness is your thing then 5th will pull (or maybe push?) from below 30 m.p.h. all the way round to speeds that are faster than I'm prepared to go...

Agree your V6 my be lazy but if you take a 1600 petrol and put it against a 1600 diesel like for like the diesel will be the lazier engine. Modern diesels are now 20k miles between services same as a petrol.

Still soulless to drive, IMHO, with a really narrow rev range so you have to stir the box constantly - or get an auto which they really don't suit.

Still not as reliable as a petrol engine by a long way (unless you go pre-common rail).

You need to spend much more than Omega money to get one new enough to be decent.

I'll stick to petrol LPG, thanks. ;)

You can't run a petrol engined car on chip fat.  That's the advantage of a diesel for me!  ;)

Modern diesels are now 20k miles between services same as a petrol.

and many will say that 20k between oil changes, especially for a diesel is far too long.  :y

Oh dear, oh dear, I would like the opportunity to change your views on that Kevin.  ;) :y  ;D
I do agree it is car dependant though.  :y

Would you like some facts ........

Over the last few days SWMBO and I have both been on quite long trips. I went to Hereford and did 350 miles in the Omega. She went to Kent and did 530 miles in her 2.0 Diesel Focus. Both cars were driven sensibly.

Omega 3.0 V6 auto trip average was 31.7 mpg
Focus 2.0 Tdci Manual trip average was 56 mpg

There you go .....

Just pray it has to go nowhere near a Citroen dealership when it's out of waranty. Took them 5 visits to fix my sat-nav which they broke whilst servicing my C5 VTR+ Nav  :'(

Now go and drive them both hard. I bet that wipes a good 8 mpg off the figures...

Derv; 56-8=48.

Mig; 31.7-8= not even 24mpg!

Derv WINS!!

Deisel loves work! Petrols love juice!!

Lol

Focus versus Omega is hardly comparing like with like. ;)

.. and a 31.7MPG V6 journey sounds like a motorway cruise. Now, I've had 24MPG on a motorway cruise. It was on an autobahn with the cruise control set to 120 MPH for a significant percentage of the time. Not something the Focus would take kindly to survive. ;)

Granted, a V6 Omega can only dream of 35MPG let alone 50, but for real world motorway cruising (over the limit but not into 3 figures) the Omega doesn't really get that much more thirsty. Most diesels I've driven tend to be quite a bit more thirsty at vaguely naughty speeds encountered in the real world, meaning that the stunning 50something per gallon figures are achieved in the lorry lane. Not somewhere I want to be. ;)

Besides, I'm not arguing that petrol is cheaper.. Just that it's worth the money. ;)

But with the Omega I get no garage bills, no labour charges. I save huge amounts in DIY service, although it costs more in fuel, end of the day it's about the same as a modern economical diesel
