Title: thats a shame...
Post by: tunnie on 05 April 2008, 18:27:05
went to view a facelift MV6 estate today, 93k miles 3.0 auto, on an X plate.

Drove up to it, and walked around, was mint on the outside, no marks, all tyres where good, recent cat back GM zorst. Boot area was all neat, recent spare. Really was excellent condition.

Opened the drivers side door, noticed, copper slip on the door arm and new washers  :o

Pop the bonnet, more copper slip on the boot catch  :o

Cam covers dry as a bone  :o

Looked though the paper work, he had a £1,453 service bill in january!  :o :o :o :o

Shed loads done, cambelt, waterpump, cam covers, wishbones and more!!

Start it up, fine... sounds smooth, took it for a drive but, ohh, whats that tapping noise?

It sounded like tappets, but then again was not? Was not like a single tappet, i know what they sound like, sounded like a load of them were dirty?  :-/

Open the window, and put foot down, and it sounded very smooth, and nothing wrong with the power. and sounded fine with the window open.

Close it, and back comes the tapping, sounded like it was comming from behind the dash, but it was with engine revs. But it stayed the same, though 1.5k to 4k.. same noise. Almost sounded like a sticky fan or something. Verry odd, never heard it before.

He was running fully sythentic oil in it though, can't see if that would make a difference.  :-/

Its a real shame, as the rest of the car was mint, 93k miles & i could have had it for £1,500.

Tax 6 months left, mot, 8 months!

Don't think so, smooth changes.

Felt like it was behind the dash, i was thinking possible exhaust manifold issues.

Knock them down saying it is the manifold leaking and what a swine of a job it is, as it does sound like a damn good car ;)

Thats what i think it is.....

Trouble is due to the price of Omega's now, is so low. Its not really worth doing it.  :(

Manifold leaks usually stop when it warms up, 10 mins drive should quieten it unless its a bad one.
Facelift on an X should have the newer type of manifold gasket so less likely.
Remember on an X plate it will be subject to the £400 tax next year.

An X plate should be a 2000 car and so will not be subject to the higher rate of tax ;)

No it won't. Its pre 2001, so older price of £185 per year.

The exhaust manifold leak was not that bad outside... and was there with the engine warm.

I think it was tappets, and its not something i want to try and fix again!

I bow to your superior knowledge mate, thought I remembered someone saying it was fitted to the later cars.
