Just had the 'Northolt' Typhoons do a low passes over here.....
Just when are we gonna be told how much these flippin' Olympics is gonna cost this country >:(
Sorry, I don't want to be a killjoy, but I find it immoral in these times, when massive amounts of people are going through hardship, losing homes etc, etc, that we are prepared to pump away billions and billions to satisfy the whims of that plonker Coe and his cronies. >:(
Just makes me cringe
Sorry....rant over (for now) ;)

I agree. :y

I agree. :y

Cost aside, the draconian airspace restrictions they are imposing to put on this ridiculous display of sabre rattling will all but close down my gliding club for one of our busiest months of the year. >:(
The Olympics might be great for the "chosen" sports and facilities (those who manage to shove enough brown paper envelopes under the right noses) but their attitude is that everyone else can get breaked. >:(
I won't be watching a minute of it. I intend to be as far away as possible.

Regarding the Government wasting money my best m8 is out in Afghanistan and has finished not only his tour but is soon to be on gardening duties his 22yr careerer fighting for Queen & country done. He has been finished now for three days but has been told he must stay put until the middle of the month still being paid but not doing any work Why ?? ??? ???

Much as I agree with the sentiments I have to say that I hope that the bigger picture will make it worthwhile :-\
The Olympics should bring a lot of travellers and tourists into the UK, which means big money into the UK economy. Plus the regeneration around the Olympic Park has increased the value of property around there.
It is very unfortunate that the large Military presence is required but I think it is the right decision in the current world position.
However, I plan to try and avoid as much of it as possible although we may end up spending a day down in London to "take in the atmosphere" if SWMBO gets her way ::) Mind you, I will be routing for one of the Paralympic Sailors as she went to the same school as me and I (sort of) know her :y

I know this is what we are being told, but......who is going to be able to afford these 'higher value' properties. What money it is supposed to generate will be spent on security during the lead up as well as during the games. Who footed the bill to rehouse the people chucked out of their houses, and the relocation of businesses. Add this to road closures, peoples normal lives disrupted whilst trying to get to work..importing luxury vehicles for the 'snots' to be ferried about in.
I see one massive white elephant that is going to cost us dearly in the long run. >:(
Geez.....I must be turning into a 'grumpy old man' (thing is, nearly everybody I talk to agrees about the games !!!) ;D

Iirc the initial estimate of cost was around £9 billion ? They are now admitting to something around £20 billion. Added tourism etc. will never bring in that kind of revenue.
The last few olympics which have been staged have apparently lost the host countries a fortune. This one will almost certainly be as bad or worse.
I must admit that I havent been down there for over a year, but I didnt see much regeneration in the surrounding area, and local people were very p1ssed off that they had been completely excluded from the whole thing from start to finish, including the thousands of jobs on the site. The vast majority of which were given to foreigners who moved into the area especially for the event.

It is costing the country £ billions yet it is in London, if London want it then they should pay for it. How about regenerating other areas of the UK ???

Olympics? This year in London? They kept that quiet. ;D ;D ;D
-
Like most sporting events it bores the Bejeezuz out of me so whatever it costs it's a heuge waste of money as far as I'm concerned.
-
well i for one is going to enjoy every minuite of the olympics ;D ;D :y
-
:( i thought up here in Newcastle we had escaped the madness, turns out some of the football matches are being played up here and during those times some businesses close to the stadium have been told they MUST close due to "security issues", woe betide anyone getting in the way of the olympic dream >:(
-
I'm going to enjoy it and i'm going to see the Beach Volleyball in the Queens front garden.
Its costing a lot but not a fraction of what that idiot gordon brown cost us when he flogged all that gold and started letting in countless benefit thieves to boost his popularity.Nor what that liar blair cost us with all his WMD's.
Anyway Boris is going to pay back every penny when he takes over from Cameroon.

I guess you will argue that it's a sport :(
Why not save money and go to the nearest lap dancing club, proper athletes and a darn site cheaper even with extras. :o :o ;D ;D

Far from a rant Terb, I considered that to be a statement of value and one which I'm more than happy to support. 8) :y

I'm right there with you John. :-* :-* :y

I like proper sport, the trouble with the Olympics is that so many non oplympic sports are included... synchonised swimming, beach volleyball football, tennis, sailing etc etc. If they kept it to a week of athletics and swimming it would conform to the original ideal, cost a fraction of what it does today and importantly be more entertaining. :y

I agree with your general statement, hence why I said "should" and not will ;)
It's a crying shame we won the bid TBH and I think the financial overspend is dreadful ;D I just hope the end of life for the Olympic stuff doesn't go the same way as the Milennium Dome ::)

I was working in Greece in the spring of 2004 for a few weeks and almost everyone I spoke to pretty much shared the above sentiments.... ::)
I remember one conversation with a chap who got quite irate about it all and he was saying how all the construction jobs had gone to Albanians because they were cheaper than Greeks, the costs had spiraled out of control, the whole of Greece was paying for it, yet it would only be Athens that got any benefits, and that the governmant had borrowed so much money it would bankrupt the country..... :'(
Quite prophetic... ::) ::) ::)

At least you have Typhoons in the west of London, here in the east we have two 41year old Puma helicopters, a team of around 170 ground crew, helicopters are unarmed but they will be carrying Royal Marine snipers, i am told they take nearly 6 mins to get airborne (wonder how far a terrorist jet loaded with explosives can travel in 6 mins) & just to top it all off the very stern message they send out to anyone entering the controlled airspace above the games is

that should scare off any would be agressors

olympics what olympics just ignore it. I know i am going to. :) :)

The IOC and FIFA are so far up their own arses that sport is a very small part of what we end up getting.
-
I heard a rumour they were trying to get Golf included, why not go the whole hog and get Darts and Snooker included?

And perhaps wall painting.
I used to live on what is now the Olympics site. Believe it or not, it was like having a bit of the countryside in London. It was a great place to grow up as a boy. There was just miles of open space all round. I lived in Temple Mill Lane, which I think now forms the Eastern? boundary to the site.
Every time I see the site on the TV, I get angry. It just seems they've built over my childhood.
Stupid, I know.

Well costs a side I will be enjoying the Olympics. I like seeing the competition and the athletes work so hard and deserve to be able to show off!!! I think it also shows that in this changing world where economic power houses are no longer the established countries It's nice to see we can still put on a pretty good party!! I know some people may feel put out but I'm glad that with all the worries in the world we can still get together and enjoy something so fundamental. Let's just enjoy the show I can't ever see a sporting event like this taking place ever again in good old Blighty

Just had the 'Northolt' Typhoons do a low passes over here.....
I believe it costs around £80,000 an hour to fly ONE of these ... :o

Havn't Londoners had something like £20-30 extra slapped on their council tax for the last 6 years to help pay for the Olympics? :-\

Nope, Council tax in Ealing has been frozen since at least 2008. Not changed much before that either :)
