Title: Bolts sheeted and corroded in
Post by: geoffr70 on 11 May 2012, 21:49:03
Hi peeps in replacing centre sections on my elite. The bolts from centre sections to cats have sheered, and the rest is corroded in. I'm using a hammer and punch to try and get the remaining thread out. Any better ideas? Thanks peeps

An 8.5 mm drill! Then use M8 bolts  :y :y :y
Or if you can drill straight, a 6.8mmm drill & a M8 tap

Grind the end of the bolt flat, centre punch the middle and drill through as big a size as possible wile leaving the threads intact. IME you won't need to drill all the way through. In practice it's difficult to get the drill square on, and it's temping to pull the cat down. Try to avoid stressing the manifold gasket on earlier models, of possible.

I used Andys plan as a fail safe. As he says, can always drill the lot out and use an over size nut and bolt. Be carefully not to snap a drill in the hole though. That's...."a bit irritating". ;D
