Title: Eruptions of smoke coming from exhaust after twenty/thirty miles driving
Post by: alpha-omega-kappa on 19 May 2012, 16:07:10
2002 Auto CDi 2.2

After engine warms up (approximately 30 miles or so) I stop at junction or lights. Accelerate away and small plume of whiteish smoke is emitted from exhaust. After another spell of continuous driving (twenty miles or so) same thing happens. Slow down, wait at junction or lights and accelerate away with larger plumes of smoke this time. Repeating the process, waiting at lights (not switching off ignition ) then driving off again provides a huge pile of smoke, enough to incovenience drivers behind me. Last time there was sufficient smoke around for me to take photos while there was still a residual amount left.

No inward signs of emergency, no warning signs on the console/dashboard and no overheating. Response is sluggish afterwards but eventually picks up after the smoke disappears.

Any clues as to where we should be looking ?

Thanks

Hopefully this'll upload ?

PS bear in mind that most of the smoke had dispersed by the time I took these photos.

Keep an eye on your water level. I'd be saying your gonna be doing the head gasket  :(

In the "old" days of driving bangers ... large volumes of smoke after a short period of idling a warm engine was usually indicative of cylinder problems ... worn rings/cylinder or valve seats/stem seals.

First thing I would do would be to have the compression tested properly if you don't own a compression tester yourself.

:(

As a first step try cleaning the crankcase breather system.

If you find yourself cleaning up an unholy mess then that will probably fix the issue.......

Don't know if it is possible on the Omega but I once had a triumph dolomite that sucked brake fluid from the servo unit into the engine leading to plumes of white smoke. Check the brake fluid level. :)

That would be my thought too.
