a 2.6 Mig can travel on a full battery with no output from the alternator, assuming using only essential electrics? Got to get the Mig home tomorrow........ ::) ::) ::)
We do have AA Relay cover, just in case, I joined last night..... :D :D :D
-
Not very would be my guess :-\ flattened my last battery whilst doing a compression test, only managed 5 cylinders before giving up ::) Producing a spark will use a fair amount of current. :'(
-
15-40 miles depending on any electrical load, and if you`re unlucky a goosed battery at the end of the journey

assuming you will have a shepherd car? i.e. someone to follow the poorly car, simply take a good set of jump leads if poorly car starts to misbehave then pull into services, field, layby, garage(if well away from the pumps)connect jump leads and give it a charge for 20 mins?

or take a few/battery with you & change over.

I was the 'shepherd' car in the Jeep, unfortunately with it being an auto I could not tow it, hence joining the AA......I stopped using them years ago after pay for year after year without use, never mind, peace of mind.
Well from the caravan (Static) to our local independent 47 miles, fully charged the battery before setting off, that said the light went off a couple of times.............very pleased it is back home without incident, should be fixed tomorrow..... :y :y :y

Good news, Mr Vamps. :y

you can tow an auto, for a limited miles at a limited speed. The AA towed me back when the waterpump shaft broke, causing the belt to jump, bending a few valves...........
Its something to do with lubrication of the gearbox parts not happening in neutral.

Yes, but how many miles and at what speed? if we had got within about 5 miles or so of home I would have towed her the rest of the way, would not have been able to get it to the garage though so would have needed him to recover me from home which would have cost me more...... ::) ::)
-
we used to tow autos no further than 30 miles at no more than 30mph when i was on recovery or seals inside box start popping

Thanks for that, though on the motorway, without the benefit of hi vis amber/red lighting that would be quite dangerous, hence the 5 miles in my thinking, ie off the motorway, or just about..... :y :y

I seem to remember 30@30 myself from years ago reading the handbook of my dad's car when I was a kid.
-
IIRC you could tow start older Autos :-\ heard horror stories about it though... MK2 Granadas have alot of momentum at 30 mph, enough to write off whatever car is doing the towing when it finally fires :-X
47 miles is further than I thought :y
-
How longs a piece of string.
With a good battery well charged then a very long way is the answer, I have certainly towed one with a half charged battery, lights on, wipers on and blower on low (to keep screen clear) for a good 60 miles.

I have heard this aswell, in fact I believe my father has done it, allways wanted to get an old auto and give it a go. Anyone else ever done it ?
Sorry for change of subject.

used to be reasonably common,on things like triumph 2litre,rover sdi.just about any yank car that was auto, and cable select, also did it a few times on mrs omegatoys bmw 325, it never harmed it,
you get it up to speed by towing in neutral, then select drive, it bump starts the car, no problem, however with the newer electronic boxes, not sure it would work? as engine has to run to enable selector switch i think?
-
I didn't realise you could tow start an auto, though I may be thinking that you can not 'bump' start, I guess the clue to that is getting it up to a good speed...... :D :D :D
Anyway, the car is back from my local Independent with a new alternator fitted and a lot of scratches on his arm, seems they are a bit awkward on a V6.... ::) ::) ::)
We did get some positive comments on the car and how 'sweet' the engine is..... :y :y

Should have the mirror to fit in a day or so Mike :)

Cheers Rob, I put a replacement temporary one on, but how are you supposed to get at the 3 screws? I undid 2 trim screws and peeled it back a bit and with a small ratchet and Phillips head managed to squeeze in there, is there something I have missed? :-\ :-\
-
Just a thought. Its lack of electrical energy causing the problem. Well connect a tow rope, and an electrical feed from the towing vehicle to the one being towed. if you use the cigar socket its fused at 10A (?) so you won't overload the towing vehicle, and 5-6 amps should be enough to run the sparks for the towed car. Provided you don't use lights or wipers, only essential stuff you should make it.

sounds good in theory .. but ....
If you have "sparks" .. the engine is running . so why tow it ... ? :) :)

As said, remove the top two doorcard screws hinge side, prise off the triangular cover above card, 2 screws to remove and the lower 3rd one I`ve found easy with a cranked screwdriver

Thanks Rob, so I did it right... :D :D As long as you have a 90 degree screwdriver then the job is a good one, quite simple really.... :y Just as well as we have gone through a few glasses, this one was a hard hit as it sent the lot over the road and left a mark on the wing, no way was the driver doing 30mph or concentrating..... >:( >:( >:(
