Title: tunnie does Scotland (very picture heavy)
Post by: tunnie on 01 June 2012, 08:34:02
I’ve been wanting to do a trip like this for a while, I had to use some holiday from work which I’d thought I’d used. So I booked it off two weeks a while ago, I started to plan, but with crap weather looked like it was a no go. But then news of the heatwave, so watching forcasts, when it said last weekend would be good, I decided to do it. I quickly put together some plans and bookings as a lot of places were full up.

Biggest problem with doing Scotland on the bike is getting there, chatted a few times with a certain chubby little admin about doing a joint trip, but neither he nor the bike are up to it, which is a shame as there are cracking roads up there.

I left bright & early at around 07:00 last Thursday, my first stop was not for 120 miles, I was a tad nervous, I’d never done such big trip in one day before. My previous record was around 170 miles going to Isle of Man TT.  I planned to go M1/A1 then take the A68, this would allow me breaks and easily find B&B or camping if I got too tired on the way up.

Before I reached my first stop to refuel both bike and myself, I was already thinking could I do it? But after a nice greasy breakfast, the sun came out it was another 150 mile haul, next stop Hexam.

Before I knew it I was on the A68 and passed the English/Scottish border:

Quick refuel again of fluids for me and the bike, my next stop was Edinburgh!

Stood next to the bike, having an ice cream I felt quite good, I had no aches nor pains, I surprised myself how easily I got here.

I pushed on further, I planned to camp at the East side of Loch Lomond. After 402 miles on the bike, I reached it:

Quickly established camp, glad I did not take M6, as apparently that was mullered most of the day:

I took the bus, which stopped just outside the site, 10 minute ride into town & rewarded myself with a drink and a meal…

Next morning it was foggy, but soon cleared up, but it was still a bit of haze in the air…

I was heading for Fort William, the weather soon cleared up…

On the way, while I consulted the map, I had a healthy lunch:

As reached Fort William the weather was getting hotter & hotter:

I thought this would be the peak, but it rose by another degree not long after this photo:

I was heading for the foot of Ben Nevis…

After that was ticked off it was over to the Commando Memorial:

After this my new target was a location used in a TV series I used to watch when I lived at home, can anyone guess it?

I was hoping to ride into the main Estate, but a barrier blocked my way :(

The owner happened to be driving in while I was outside having a drink, apparently the building pictured and the Estate are all rented out.

Still, not a total waste of time, the roads there were not half bad:

Now I actually rode past my planned camping site, but I did not like it. Too “ordered” numbered bays, caravans and tents packed in, by chance I found nice alternative. Paid my £6 and established camp at the back of the site…

It backed onto a nice little stream, I decided to have a morning swim here, instead of using the toilet block. Quite refreshing!

Nice empty campsite…

Another reason I liked this site, is it had a pub at the top of the road. My previous planned one had nothing in the surrounding area. Another drink & read….

So day 3, this time I was heading from Fort William towards Applecross, I stopped of near Loch  Ness

I reached the rather lovely Eilean Donan Castle:

As I had plenty of time, I popped over the bridge into Skye…

But I turned around, headed back towards Applecross, at this point it was just too hot, around 30 degrees, had all vents open I could but still too hot, I hoped over the Applecross pass it would be cooler.

To cool down, plenty of these were had:

Now I think every road should feature a sign like this:

I began the climb to Applecross, the views just got better & better.

View from top of the pass….

I then continued down the other side…

Established camp, but wish I’d gone wild camping. The showers would only dish out hot water, after long ride in 30 degree heat, I wanted a cold shower, not hot!! Also had live music in the evening, I came to Scotland for the tranquillity, the views not for some crappy cover band at 11pm.

But at least the pub made up for it….

Had various chats with people while having a drink and eat, a German couple (apparently the Germans love Scotland!) an english couple and possibly the most un-PC women you could meet. Some of my favourite quotes from the evening:

“I don’t know if I live in Bangalore or Chicago”

“Those folk who were those veils, they must be ugly buggers if they have to cover their face”

“Where I live, coronation street it is not!”

So many others too, but can’t remember them all.

After enjoying a nice sunset, I headed to bed. Next day, my aim was Rogart.

As I had taken the pass to reach Applecross, I took the Coast Road on the way out, again the views just got better & better:

Off coast road, continued pushing up North….

Again it was soo hot, I had to find shade when I stopped. I did pull into this garden centre / tourist thing (brown on side of road, never fully read it) Saw some spots with wooden roof, but shocked to see a sign that read “Parking for cars with dogs only” – This I thought was appalling, it was feking hot 28 degrees again, this place was encouraging owners to leave their dog in the car because it had shade? Place looked shit anyway, so carried on and found a nice little side road to pull in, rest, eat and watch the world go by.

I reached Rogart way ahead of time, I decided to push on to John O Groats, I was well aware this place would be a dump, but it was something I had to tick off as I had done Lands End this time last year.

While I was there a team of cyclists had just reached it too, they decided to celebrate by jumping in the sea, even though it was hot, the water was cold, or so I heard!

Not me though, I decided to tuck into a healthy snack…

I headed over the top of the coast, then back down to Rogart, to a place called Sleeperzzz, which I spotted on the GS forum.

In a nut shell, they are 1960’s First Class Rail carriages that have been converted into a hostel:

Out of the 6 compartments, 3 are “bedrooms”, 1 sitting room (all seats left in, books, info on display), another is a kitchen & finally a dinning room.

At £15 per night, it was  a bargin! About 8 other bikers were there that evening too, one of them got me a beer from their supply as soon as I arrived. I joined them in the pub later for a few more.

The next day I thought the weather had left me, it dropped 10 degree’s, the cloud was out…

But not to worry, Sun soon came out again, and gave me some spectacular views as I did a small loop over the West coast, over towards Ullapool:

Tiredness kicked in a bit here, so had a nice 30 minute little nap…

After another nice nights stay in Rogart, it was time for home. I decided to treat myself to a B&B near Loch Lomond this time, ready to set off back home. Rather dull 380 mile motorway blast.

Finally got home & the bike averaged over 52 mpg, over 1,850 miles. Now I know I can reach Scotland in a day, think I’ll be doing many more trips!

Beautiful area, big fast roads. Saw just 2 coppers the whole week!

Lovely pictures, apart from some idiot has parked Mr McGregor's ride in every shot.

You did well with the weather, suspect that can make or break a trip like that.  Mind you, on my commute into work, I was getting uncomfortably warm - the crap we have to wear is one of the downsides to biking in hot weather.

MY wife and I did Scotland last year on our Goldwing.  Like you, we picked a week when the weather was fantastic and what a place! Despite being up in the north-east, we rarely get further than the border on little day jaunts so it was quite a revelation delving further into the highlands. I'd love to do it again, maybe venturing up to the north coast but the weather is always a bit of a lottery when it comes to Scotland. When it's good, it's very, very good but when it's bad it can really take the fun out of it!

Thanks again all  :y

Yes biking gear can be a right pain, I must admit, I was a bit naughty & had to unzip my jacket quite a bit to let in some ventilation. Also some Scottish A roads are like single track, so at 30mph its great to ride without gloves  :-X

I did see some people riding in shorts & t-shirt, but I stopped well short of that.

I'm guilty of just using poppers on jacket, not zip, when its hot  :-[

Wouldn't go as far as removing gloves, even at 10mph, gravel rash makes a mess

I know I should't but it was just soo hot, I'd pass a car once every 10 minutes. So I risked it, got a nice tan on my hands now though  ::)

...some Scottish A roads are like single track, so at 30mph its great ...

Should try them at 60, then. :y

Especially when you're high enough up to see what's coming round the next bend.

Certainly enjoyable roads in a convoy, especially when you're tail-end charlie so you don't get the nasty surprises. :y

chatted a few times with a certain chubby little admin about doing a joint trip, but neither he nor the bike are up to it, which is a shame as there are cracking roads up there.
After using the bike for commuting the last couple of weeks, I know I'm defineately not up to it this side of being repaired  :-[

Bike? Who knows.  Suspect it would be fine TBH, although there is always that doubt in the back of your mind about any 24yr old vehicle.  In the sort of heat we had, cooling could be a problem, although I know you don't exactly 'press on', so might be perfectly fine.  Although would take jump leads, as the fan has been running for over 5mins after stopping in this recent heat ;D.

But as discussed before you went, I hope something becomes a possibility, hopefully even this year if Autumn is kind.

Yes, as long as options are open, we just need a good weather report & weekend off. Can always B&B it?

Chatting to locals, there are no "Trespass" laws as such, its up to the land owner to stop you. So wild camping is totally legal, as mentioned some people did it around the bay at Applecross. Far better place I think especially with that weather, wish I tried it, easy to swim into the sea, although I bet it would be a bit "refreshing"  ;D

I'd like to do Norway next, but sadly the direct ferry has ended. So until that starts up again, that one is on the back burner. But one day that sticker will get added to one of the panniers.  :)

We did Scotland the other week, came home last Saturday. Its an absolutely lovely place, we stayed in Arisaig & visited Skye & went to Fort William a couple of times. I bet its a great ride (bit hot though last week). We saw loads of bikers and it started me thinking about doin my DAS course again  ::) . I'd love to just be able to hop on a bike, save a hell of a lot of money on my daily commute 50+ miles a day. Poor old miggy only had 53k on him when I bought him last year, now pushin 71k

Excellent pics tunnie, I can say that I have been on most of those routes....sister in law lives in Balmacarra so know that part very well. As said the weather makes or breaks a run like that, you certainly picked the best of it, well done.
Pity you didn't get to be over the other side, Perthshire and then the Angus Glens are just as good with less midges to boot.

Been nearly 5 years since we moved away and seeing those makes me want to do a road trip in my former stomping grounds.

Thank you.

Agreed!
4 years away for us now too and I miss the drives around the glens we used to take.
We lived in Montrose and could just point the car in any direction (except east - a bit wet that way) and find some of what we see in these pics, and still be back in time for the school run if need be.

We plan to move back in a couple of years!

If anyone has been putting off a trip to Scotland I would wholeheartedly recommend going.

There's a fair few layby's along the road that runs along the side of Loch Ness, and the one at the Inverness end of the road has steps that lead down to the shore.
Well worth a stop there and the view is awesome!

Within reason, wild camping is quite legal.  Laybys, large green roundabouts and the like are actively discouraged though, obviously....  :)

I've always fancied doing something like that in my Omega.

Even went as far as to plan a Lands End to John O' Groats trip last year. Didn't execute the plan though :(

well done Mark, glad you enjoyed it, tis more fun with another though!! :y

Great pics mate - shame someone kept parking a motorbike in most of them  ::) ;)

Looks like you enjoyed your trip and weather was kind to you - Scotland can be so uninviting when its p*ssing down!

Remember doing a similar trip/itinerary when I was but a mere lad in an old E93A Ford Popular many years ago.

Yes, I did meet a bunch of bikers at Sleeperzzz, 7 of them all riding together.

Its been suggested few times before, but an OOF bike/alternative vehicle meet. Maybe try and make it into a little road trip if possible? Perhaps not Scotland as quite a lot of time would be needed for that, but do Wales?

I know Daz was interested, Albs get some use out of your bike? Bruce? Long haul for you, not sure if you can get your FJR down south by other means?

I'm lucky with capacity on the GS for me to camp, but thats an issue for others, so we could B&B it?

I think it could be a riot if, we can get it organised.

I think you are forgetting that many riders, rightly or wrongly, will want to go an awful lot faster than you.  To give you some idea, as you really seem to be struggling with the concept, I am a very slow rider ;).  You are probably looking for riders happy enough to poodle along, and be perfectly happy sitting behind traffic.

IMHO, if you end up with a group where some want to rag the thing everywhere, and make short work of traffic, along with the poodlers, everyone will be frustrated, as the fast riders will get frustrated constantly waiting, and the poodlers will get frustrated, maybe embarrassed, not keeping up. And this is when accidents tend to happen.

Again, to reiterate, whilst you may think that GS is quick, it really isn't. Its quite agricultural.  In that rider scale from Poodler to Fast, just so you know, IME, I'd put myself at the upper end of Poodler.  I feel I have to drum this home, as you've told me before to take it a bit slower.

Hope that makes sense, and in no way a critism to your/mine/anyone's riding style.  Just ensure you get like minded people from a riding style point of view :)

Understood  :y

Part of the speed is my lack of experience, I passed in 2009 on the bike but if you add up actual bike hours its probably no more than a month or two of actual riding experience. But at the end of the day, I enjoy doing 80mph on the bike. Fast riders on their crotch rockets maybe faster on the corners & off the line, but I bet they would not be so fast after 400 miles  ;)

Going to Scotland, I made progress overtaking any car at the earliest opportunity. Over the whole time I was up there, not a single biker overtook me  ;)

Be nice for someone like Bruce to comment on my riding, but if there is no will for a meet of this type  :(

In that rider scale from Poodler to Fa..

That'll make me in the slow poodler bracket then .......  ::) ::) ::) ::)

IHMO and IME, there is little wrong. I think you ride quite well now, less and less of those 'moments' that used to plague your riding, and cause me to fill my pants. Experience.

That wasn't my point. Riders are all different, and for a group run, they all need to be similar.  I also doubt many riders will be happy spending hours on the M1/A1, poodling along at 80. Some will, rightly or wrongly, be wanting a) non stop corners, b) wanting to sit at 130+ all day every day. And yes, these would cover 400 miles far, far quicker than you ;)

Nothing wrong at all with your steady, conservative riding :y. But I can see it being frustrating for the TMNT boyz...

How comes? You have no idea on my riding I imagine  ???.  Remember, I've had to put my concerns into tunnie-world, where 85mph on a straight on a bike is just reckless ::)

Depends who wants to do it?

The group of bikers I meet at Rogart, could not have had a more different fleet.

There was a Bandit, VFR, 1200RT, brand spankers Pan & one of those new fully automatic big bikes.

I'm fairly sure most here are not interested in out right speed, or maybe they are  :-\

These "groups" of riders tend to work themselves out IME, and eventually tend to ride with people they feel happ with. Experience and average speed being key factors.

Absolute prime concern is not to be drawn in to exceeding ones own limits. Which is less likely to happen riding with similar minded riders.

Personally I can't think of anything worse than plodding up the M1. Although a more comfy, longer range bike would help. But then play time up there would no compromised... Massively compromised. But there we are. Each to thier own as they say.

Happy biking. :)
