Miggy is still in the specialists having the air con fixed. :(
They 'phoned mid afternoon to say it would not be finished in a day as planned, seems they were having major problems changing the "expansion valve" (?) and were possibly going to have to remove the glove box and/or dash !!! (do I detect a rising bill here or what .. :( )
I should get it back Monday.
So any travelling this weekend will be in SWMBO s clit :( underpowered, noisy, uncomfortable and one too many pedals .. :(

Glove box has to be removed to change the expansion valve, its not to bad once its out though.
Stick to your guns, you were quoted a price and thats what your gona pay......if they didn't do thier homework then thats thier over sight.

Every aircon system has an expansion valve of some sort, its bolted to the side of the evaporator.
It basically regulates the compressed liquid coolent through a small orrafic and as it expands into the evaporator it absorbs heat from the air as it passes over the evaporator surface hence colling it.
So what happened, total pump failure due to a blockage in the system.
Mine has the same, need to get a new bearing for the spare aircon pump and then flush adn fit the replacement condenser, expansion valve and compresor I have before a re-gas.
-
So thier diagnosis/rectification of
new compressor - £200
new expansion valve - £47
New drier/filter - £17
Full flush/clean - £ 80
6 hours labour - £300
Re-gas - £40
VAT - £120
seems to make sense then ?? They did say it would be a push to get it done in a day, but they thought they would. Perhaps they have done the sums right but just ran out of time ..
They seemed pretty honest and up front when I was there .... we'll find out on Monday I guess :)
Interestingly, they think my failure is the other way ... compressor failure of some sort, but not total - its running but the system is full of fine metal particles which can only come from the compressor and the expansion valve has failed fully open, so pressure is low ... 4.4 bar instead of 8-12 bar
:( white mans magic to me ..... :) either way ... its FUBAR

chances are the expansion valve is jammed open with debris, however they are very difficult to clean.

Quick update before I go to work ..:(
Just picked the miggy up - aircon now running VERY cold - and despite the comments made in another thread - all done at the original quoted price
:)
I can be quite firm when the situation needs it :)
So they had the car 3 days and got paid for 8 hours labour ...
Still the best part of £1000 to get the darned thing fixed, but it works properly and has a 12 month warranty.
Off to work shortly .. see you all later if you're still up :)
